Newquay Zoo Newquay Zoo News

Popped into the zoo for a couple of hours last week as I was in the area. Similar visit to my previous one at around the same time last year, so not much changed apart from the recent addition of Parma wallabies and Red Pandas. Some points of interest; the female Philippine deer has died, leaving currently 2.1 (adult male, son and young daughter) so they will need some reorganisation soon. There are five Visayan pigs. I saw an Owston's Palm Civet active (or at least awake) for the first time as one of their two pairs nowadays is in the small nocturnal house. The latest black wildebeest calf is already well grown, but part of the paddock was very muddy after the recent rains.

One downside is that I always think the Lion enclosure here is far too small- they are talking about a new one I know- why not simply remove/rehouse the Lynx which are pretty invisible anyway, and extend the Lions' outdoors to give them that area too? I suppose it doesn't change the small indoor area though.

Newquay is an excellent zoo for its small size. I always enjoy the small Tropical House, particularly the delightful flock of Cuban finches and the Tanagers. The 'gems' bird exhibit is good too.

I visited yesterday for the first time in nearly a year. There have been a few developments in that time. As @Pertinax mentioned above, there is a new paddock for Parma wallabies on the site of the old Fossa exhibit (opposite the lions). The aviary beside these wallabies, which used to hold lilacine amazons, has been rebuilt for potoroos and swift parakeets, which are a nice combination. The amazons have been moved round the corner to the aviary next to the penguins. Also a new house has been built in the exhibit beside the red panda, which used to hold kusimanses; it looks virtually complete, but the outdoor area needs some work. I don't know whether it will hold kusimanses again or something completely different. The green aracaris and little red and white crake(s) were in the Tropical House, presumably for the winter. But spring comes early in Cornwall, the black-necked swans had two cygnets.

I went today as a PZ member. It was fantastic. The whole site was immaculate. It was clearly evident that so much work had gone into opening. Highlights (so many) was seeing the lynx so active & close, the Java Magpies in the splendid Gems complex, Kudu, Armadillo outdoors and so very active, Vasa Parrot flock & the BokyBoky.
The smaller monkeys on the islands were all very shy & nervous. The pelicans looked great, as did the Parma wallaby group.
I purchased so many coffees & snacks to contribute & I really hope they survive. A wonderful little place.

Good news. Lets hope this is an omen...

Did you see what they've put in the new house next to the Pandas? Do they still have Kusimanse?

I believe they have Nyala, not Kudu. Their FB page or somewhere announced a calf born recently.
Yes, you are right! It’s because my 10 year old kept saying L Kudu (she collects the Schleich & collecta figures) & was arguing with me about it on the way home - Looks like she convinced me!!

I visited yesterday afternoon. I was a little concerned that the closure of several of my favourite areas of the zoo would spoil the experience, and while I would have liked to visit the Tropical House, the Nocturnal House and the little aviary behind the meerkats, there was still plenty to see and enjoy. The zoo was very green and 'Gems of the Jungle' was almost overgrown, but I spotted young Brahminy mynahs and collared finchbills among the foliage. I liked the new exhibit for six-banded armadillos in the Village Farm area: the armadillos were very active, putting on a good show for the visitors. The new house in the former kusimanse exhibit didn't seem fully fitted out and I also noted that the buffy-headed capuchins were not on show, the enclosure they occupied held a young chevrotain and an immature crowned lemur (the adults have a new baby).
I had to stifle a fit of the giggles as a gentleman with a rather fruity voice educated his party behind my back, "Those are Java green magpies - from the Philippines!" :D

Buffy-headed Capuchins? There have been White-fronted Capuchins and Yellow-breasted Capuchins in recent years.....have I missed something?

The white - fronted are much more of a draw for me personally, I can't remember seeing them anywhere else in years!

Er . . . yes. You mean white-throated capuchins (Cebus capucinus), which are the black and white ones. White-fronted capuchins (Cebus albifrons) are various shades of brown, but not really white at all.
Hands up all those who aren't confused yet o_O
