Newquay Zoo Newquay Zoo News

I think the parent stock were sourced from Africa?
Yes.
2.2 were born at Hamerton last year to the imported parents (1.1 to CZ and 1.1 to Newquay) and Hamerton have another litter of 3 this year.
Dvur Kralove has an imported pair from a different source, but these have not bred; and neither have any others recently outside Moscow. Historically though of course, Havana and others. Port Lympne bred them, but there seems to be no record of rearing or subsequent dispersal. The last remaining old animal from PL is now at Prague, along with one from Kronberg.
Lets hope DK manage it!
The un-related male Hamerton had sourced in SA has now fallen through - lets hope another zoo steps up to the mark. They didnt bother with Grison or Golden Possums, or several others.

I hope they can eventually exchange one of the pair for an unrelated animal and build a larger enclosure for breeding: the disused area of the old bamboo maze (opposite the otters) might be suitable.

The old bamboo maze was earmarked for a new lion enclosure, but fell through due to Covid and the resulting issues which then resulted in the lions moving to Paignton, so could be a possibility for development when (if) funds allow.

They successfully reared on at least two occasions that I know of, and in both cases Damian Aspinall ended up pulling his standard-issue "send the young back into the wild without any attempt to ensure they will survive there, and call it conservation" tactic.

The female came in a separate import from the two younger males so I believe they are unrelated of memory serves me right.

Interesting! Happy to be corrected if that's the case.

From what I understand the supplying zoo reneged on the agreement and sold the animal (and several others of other species) elsewhere. Hamerton lost a LOT of money, but I dont know any details.

Thank you TLD, I could not find that info.
Sending them back to the 'wild' could explain why they do not appear on any records.

The private Berlin collection received 2.1 from the feral wild animal project, it’s a pity one of these males couldn’t move to Hamerton to pair with the single female
That is interesting, too. The surviving pair of Tanzanian Aardwolves from the babies imported by Dalton, were kept singly until they died, maybe this will happen again?

A separate import does not mean they are unrelated, at all. They could be from the same source and might even be from the same parents.

Visited Newquay on Monday and the male brown hyena seems to have settled in fairly well, while the female only stuck her head out from the underneath the platform in the indoor area and continued to pace up and down along the wall while the male got pretty up close to the glass while eating a piece of meat. Keepers ended up closing the viewing for the rest of my visit there but I was able to catch some decent pictures of the male hyena which I will post later today.

Are there any Crowned Lemurs left at Newquay, or have they gone out of the species?

SHAUN the Brazilian (Lowland) Tapir has passed away at only 5 years. He suffered severe health issues.
Newquay Zoo on Instagram: "It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Shaun, our beloved 5-year-old South American tapir. Shaun passed away on Sunday 17 August, when he was humanely euthanised due to his declining condition. In recent months, Shaun had been experiencing ongoing issues with colic that were impacting his quality of life. Despite the expertise of our veterinary staff and all possible efforts, Shaun’s condition sadly deteriorated, and the compassionate decision was made to euthanise him on welfare grounds. Shaun was born here at Newquay Zoo on 15 August 2020 and was a cherished member of our South American enclosure family. He was popular on social media and became something of a celebrity with visitors. Born to parents Al Capone and Emily (who sadly passed away in 2022), Shaun was mentored by his devoted father throughout his life, allowing him to develop the gentle, curious personality that made him so special. One of his keepers, Tracey Twomey, shared her thoughts: “From the moment he was born he stole everyone’s hearts. Knowing that Shaun had been poorly for a while hasn’t made this any easier at all, but I know we can take comfort that he had the best life possible with us and he knew how loved he was all the time including in his final moments.” His dad will continue to be closely monitored by his dedicated keepers. We understand that many visitors formed special connections with Shaun over the years, and his passing will be deeply felt. We welcome messages of condolence, which can be shared with Shaun’s keeper team, who knew him best."
