Newquay Zoo Newquay Zoo News

Yet another male lion will be arriving shortly, his name is Sampson and should arrive around midday today. He is from Combe Martin.

It would seem this is the fourth mate for resident female, Connie. I believe the plan was to wait until Connie passed away and then the current lion enclosure would be home to Jaguars. Is that true?

Connie's mates:

1. Ronnie- her father, died at Newquay.
2. Kabir- unrelated male, Barbary blood- died at Newquay.
3. Charlie- younger brother, died recently at Newquay.
4. Samson- young unrelated male, from Combe Martin via Linton.

I don't know but quite possibly as the enclosure is still on the small side for Lions (though originally they had a really tiny 'cage' enclosure on the other side of the path, which nowadays has something else in it-Fossas?) Their problem now is this new younger male will probably far outlive Connie but maybe they can relocate him again then, rather than obtain yet another partner, and then bring in Jaguars(or other similar sized cat).

A good little concise summary of their males btw.;)

Thanks took me a bit to work it out. ;)

That maybe the plan, Connie is now fifteen and the young male is coming up to five in June. I believe the current enclosure is to small to house a breeding group or pair of Lions. (Although I've not seen the actual enclosure, so I'm not judging yet)

Its adequate for a pair but no more. The inside dens are pretty dismal/dark and look cramped for such big cats. Medium sized cats would probably be better suited.

I've covered the background to Samson, and all that on my blog here

Just Lions

If anyone is interested about it, also are loads of photos about Samsons, siblings and parents :)

New Black Wildebeest calf born recently. Thought to be a female but not 100% confirmed yet

Narrow Striped Mongoose is also being handreared

Re: Wildebeest calf

Very good news, the female seems to become pregnant instantly after she gives birth. This should (If I'm correct) will be there fourth calf, there second female overall.

is it fourth, or third?

First one died. 2nd one was male(went to Trotters with Marwell female).

No 3?

They've had four calves to Malaga x Lazar;

2009; 0.0.1 dns
2010; 1.0 (Trotters)
2011; 0.1 (Newquay)
2012; 0.0.1 (Maybe a female)

The original four arrived from Dvur Kralove and a pair were sent to Marwell, and a female was bred there.

My visit on 29th January 2013 went very well indeed; I saw everything I hoped to, and finally broke my kinkajou curse!

A selection of photographs is now being uploaded to the gallery.

It says they were introduced to their new mate 'Alfie' but there's no mention of any resident female- does that mean they were down to 1.0 before these arrived?
