Rare Species Conservation Centre News 2015

The death of Malayan tigress Momoe at Halle is very sad . I seem to remember being told at RSCC last year that she was hand-reared and did not know how to act appropriately when mixed with a male for mating .

A further 2 clouded leopards were born a week ago (Facebook ) . Are they following the American model of hand-rearing all cloudie cubs ?

I was told that all the clouded leopard cubs are being hand-reared.

Oh my goodness I just have to visit the cloudies later this summer. Have only ever been to London zoo in the UK. (Been to many in Australia, however, & have seen an incredible amount of Australian animals in the wild...)

The new giant otters arrived at the RSCC from Duisburg Zoo today. They are already on-display in their enclosure which has taken two years to construct (the most extensive project the RSCC has undertaken).

I haven't heard any of the sort, they are building furiously and they have only just got giant otters. I assume you mean closing for winter.

CONFIRMED, RSCC IS CLOSING......

Dear supporters, It is with regret that we are having to close the RSCC, due to a severe lack of revenue coming in the door from visitors in the last 2 years. Our last day of opening will be August 31st 2015. We are sorry to disappoint you all and as Im sure you are aware our keepers and management are extremely saddened that this has had to happen. Please note that animals will soon be leaving to go to their new homes at other collections, so please bear with us in this difficult time. We will not be able to answer any messages via Facebook due to this process. Best Wishes to you all from RSCC management and thank you for your past support!

What a very great shame. I'll probably try to drive down on Tuesday then to catch it before it closes.

More and more niche (and exciting) collections seem to be financially struggling. It's not very nice to see how much more uniform the UK's zoo collections are becoming.

I'm going to have to go next Saturday to catch it before it closes too. How sad, I've been putting off going till some of the new species were on show but I suppose I'll never see them now!

This place is closing down again? Didn't it have the same issues a few years ago? (I'm guessing that there was a different owner then). This being the U.K. I'm also assuming that the zoo has never received much in the way of government support or taxpayer subsidies like many big zoos in other countries. Lastly, does no one actually visit the place other than zoo nerds?

Very sad news . I visited twice over the years , seeing the original and last year , the expanded area .

Only yesterday I booked accommodation in Sandwich for the IZES event at the start of October . I was really looking forward to it . I assume this will not now be happening .

Most surprising in light of recent new costly developments and species..
Agreed, I find this very odd, when they have spent the last 2 years developing the site, and only just brought in the giant otters.
When the place closed about 5 years ago, they got rid of a lot of the animals to other zoos( Colchester gained several), but within no time there were reports of New Sun bears arriving & other New animals, which were on the site for at least 2 years before the place opened again. So it survived a long while with NO visitors at all!

It is probably cheaper to run with no visitors and only keeping staff , rather than having a few visitors with all the additional staff costs involved with an open collection . Without external funding neither option is viable in the long term .

I wonder how much they spent on marketing the collection - if the general public do not know you are there they will not visit .
