Zoo Osnabrück News about Osnabrück Zoo

The "Ankor-Wat" area of the zoo seems to be complete now after the old monkey house was torn down.

New enclosures for Camels as well as for Red Pandas / Tufted Deer were added at the place of the old monkey house. Moreover the siamangs are now housed in the former Panda / Tufted Deer enclosure (originally designed for the three species together) and a quarantine area was build.

In my opinion the Orangutans still need improvement since the building houses two groups (each one male & one female + Gibbons) and can't be compared to other modern enclosures around europe and even Osnabrück itself if you consider that the zoo build an amazing Chimpanzee exhibit before the renovation of the Orangutan house, which set the bar very high.

On Thursday, October 12, 2023, an infant chimpanzee died due to an accident during birth.
The female chimpanzee Tamika gave birth for the first time and unfortunately, the newborn fell from a great height at the end of the birthing process, as the mother is extremely inexperienced being a first-time mother.
An intervention by veterinarians or caretakers during birth was neither possible nor intended.
The chimpanzee group has gathered around the injured infant after birth and is currently keeping it with them.
