There are plans made by the previous CEO, it was the designated end of the old master plan. However the zoo doesn*t really have money and the changes would have cost 20+ mio Euro. The new CEO and the responsible zoological staff is working on a new master plan, content is not known yet. However it would be a giant surprise if they sticked to the old plan. They will probably need to do changes to the enclosure but most likely in a much lesser extent.

It just the enclosure looks kinda ugly from the pics I saw

It's not a beauty, outdoor size pretty much minimum requirement, bad views for the visitors. For the animals it's okay, it at least is functional as you can split the enclosure into three parts if needed.
 
The female Sumatran Tiger DIANA has passed away in July.

Dieser Kreislauf gehört zum natürlichen Lauf des Lebens und begleitet auch unseren Alltag am Schölerberg. Schweren Herzens mussten wir uns am 6. Juli 2025 von unserer Sumatra-Tigerin Diana verabschieden. Sie wurde seit einiger Zeit wegen einer Nierenerkrankung medizinisch betreut. Trotz intensiver medizinischer Betreuung verschlechterte sich Dianas Zustand in kurzer Zeit so verheerend, dass sich eine tierschutzgerechte Euthanasie als einzige Möglichkeit herausgestellt hat, Leiden zu verhindern. Diana lebte seit 2014 in Osnabrück und war für viele Besucher*innen ein besonderes Tier. Noch bedeutender war jedoch ihre Rolle als Botschafterin für ihre stark bedrohte Art: In der Wildnis gibt es Schätzungen zufolge nur noch rund 370 Sumatra-Tiger. Sie sind damit vom Aussterben bedroht – Lebensraumverlust, Wilderei und Zerschneidung der Lebensräume setzen ihnen massiv zu. Tigerkater Tilak lebt nun allein auf der Anlage. Für Tiger ist das nichts Ungewöhnliches, da sie in der Wildnis Einzelgänger sind. Wie es langfristig mit ihm weitergeht, stimmen wir aktuell eng mit dem Europäischen Erhaltungszuchtprogramm (EEP) ab – zum Schutz und Erhalt dieser einmaligen Großkatzen. Zugleich gibt es auch Grund zur Hoffnung: Unsere Nashornkuh Amalie ist erneut trächtig. Wenn alles gut verläuft, erwarten wir im Frühjahr 2026 Nachwuchs – ein wertvoller Beitrag zum Erhalt der bedrohten Breitmaulnashörner. So schwer der Abschied auch ist, so hoffnungsvoll blicken wir auf neues Leben – ein Spiegel des stetigen Wandels im Zoo. "
 
The zoo has lost some of its animals these days : the Lioness KIPANGI, the Giraffe MAKENA and 1 Maned Wolf.
Zoo Osnabrück on Instagram: " Tierische Senioren im Zoo In den vergangenen Tagen mussten wir uns von gleich mehreren unserer älteren Schützlinge verabschieden. Unser Afrikanischer Löwe Kipangi ist am vergangenen Mittwoch im Alter von 17 Jahren gestorben. Am Wochenende folgte die Giraffe Makena, die in diesem Jahr aus Münster zu uns gekommen war und bereits ein beachtliches Alter erreicht hatte. Außerdem mussten wir uns von unserem letzten Mähnenwolf trennen, der ebenfalls ein langes Leben führen durfte. Diese Abschiede fallen uns schwer. Zugleich haben alle drei Tiere die Lebenserwartung ihrer Artgenossen in der Wildnis bereits übertroffen – was tatsächlich keine Seltenheit ist: Eine groß angelegte Studie konnte zeigen, dass über 80 Prozent aller Säugetierarten in zoologischen Einrichtungen im Durchschnitt älter werden als ihre Verwandten in der Wildnis. Das liegt vor allem an den Bedingungen, die wir unseren Tieren hier bieten können. Sie müssen selten Revierkämpfe austragen noch vor Fressfeinden auf der Hut sein. Hinzu kommt die zuverlässige Versorgung mit Futter und Wasser – und nicht zuletzt eine tiermedizinische Betreuung, die nicht nur Krankheiten behandelt, sondern auch vorbeugend wirkt, etwa durch Impfungen oder regelmäßige Gesundheitschecks. Natürlich bringt das Alter auch im Zoo seine Herausforderungen mit sich. Wie bei uns Menschen treten typische Alterserscheinungen auf, die als geriatrische Erkrankungen bezeichnet werden. Deshalb beobachten Veterinäre, Pfleger*innen und Kurator*innen unsere Senioren besonders aufmerksam und reagieren frühzeitig – sei es durch eine angepasste Ernährung, gezielte medizinische Behandlung oder Veränderungen in der Gestaltung der Anlagen. Der Abschied von Kipangi, Makena und unserem Mähnenwolf fällt uns schwer. Doch wir sind dankbar, dass wir sie so viele Jahre begleiten durften – und ihnen bis ins hohe Alter ein gutes Leben ermöglichen konnten."
 
The zoo recently announced plans for a new water playground. The theme is supposed to be a meadow / wetlands landscape. In a 3D rendering, you can also spot a Hobbit hole. No new animal enclosures were specifically mentioned, but there was a reference to native animals (the question here is whether this means wild native species or domestic animals), and in the 3D rendering, rabbits or hares can be seen in an area surrounded by stones.

This project is listed in the donation section of the zoo’s website. There, €300,000 is given as the base target, with the following additional goals:

  • Goal #1 +€100,000 – Sales kiosk & restroom facilities

  • Goal #2 +€40,000 – Sheep: stable & enclosure

  • Goal #3 +€50,000 – Rabbits: stable & enclosure

  • Goal #4 +€20,000 – Chickens: stable & enclosure

  • Goal #5 +€90,000 – More plants, seating areas & playground equipment
It seems as if the animals are not the main focus here. This would be the zoo’s third major playground, which makes it difficult for me to understand why the focus is not on animal welfare and facility expansions instead. There are still many areas in the zoo where this money could be better invested (elephants, orangutans, parrot aviaries, …).

According to the zoo, many visitors requested this project, which is probably based on an Instagram poll. However, under the announcement post on Instagram, it’s also clear that many people would have preferred something else in this area—especially since the zoo is already very well developed for families and children, and after all, the animals should be the main priority.

Long-nosed potoroos:
For the first time, long-nosed potoroos have offspring at Osnabrück Zoo. This species moved into the zoo this February. On July 1 the young animal was observed for the first time outside the pouch of mother Willa.

Green Aracari:
A Green Aracari was confiscated from an illegal transport and handed over to the zoo by Wildtierstation_Sachsenhagen. To help the bird settle in quickly, he will be joined in the coming days by a partner from another zoo.

The zoo celebrates its 90th anniversary next year and they did not want to have a central place like the former sea lion enclosure to be an empty spot by then. It needed to be something cheap. The mentioned poll was mere social media and lots of moms suggested another playground, while the second most requested aspect were aviaries. It's not only the third playground like you said but even the fifth (Takamanda, Giraffe, Waterworld, the carroussel in the central place) plus the goat petting enclosure, while more and more enclosures are empty. Right now the amount of donations is at 90.000 of the needed 300.000 for the basic idea, which is pretty poor considering that a sponsor already gave 50.000 Euro as starting point for this campaign.

On to something positive:
- a drill monkey was born last month, mother again was Katara
- 1.1 swift parrots are a new species
