Chester now have 3 Great Indian Hornbills 1 in T.R,1 in E.of the A.F and 1 in the Ronald and Kathlen Pyior Aviarys, the Wrinkelled Hornbill female and chick(s) are still sealed in the nest box,the zoo on the whole yesterday was very wet with alot of flooding the rhino underpass at Tasavo would have made a great hippo pool as the water was up to the top of the gates.Work has started on putting up a new fence for the African Wak-thru Aviary but work may on hold due to the condition as the mini-digger was leaning against the fence as it had sunk in the mud.Fianaly the Prevost Squirrel has gone they now have another group of Red-bellied Squirrel in the enclosure now.

Why has the Prevorst gone, any ideas? Have they maybe just gone offshow, rather than leaving the collection?

Also, out of interest, are the Pyior? Aviaries, the ones up near the snowy owls, and mauritius kestrels?

No they are the aviaries next to the gift shop when you walk from IiD up towards the marmots

how many enclosures have the black rhino got in tsavo and could one be re-done to make a basic hippo enclosure

Chester have 7 black rhino (unless the other female arrived making 8) with two on their way as well. They have 8 outdoor paddocks for them. So not really unless they down sized the number of Black rhino they are keeping but I doubt that would happen as they are recieving another female and have two that are pregnant!

I was just trying to give an idea of how deep the water was in the area not seriously suggesting the zoo, gets Hippos back for those of you who don`t know the zoo the depth of the water would be somewhere around 6 foot.

My Chester Zoo wander yesterday

My first visit this year . Shame it was so muddy everywhere after all the rain . Fairly quiet , no doubt due to weather . I should think many zoos will have had an awful summer season .

The 'Sunken gardens' paths were totally flooded and the area closed off . Asian rhinos not seen outside in extremely muddy paddock , could see one inside through small hole in door - inside viewing would be nice .

I liked the new bridge and had excellent views of 2 cheetahs . I expected the 'yurt' to be full of cheetah info. boards .

Young seen - several lion-tailed macaques , bongo , capuchin ( another male ? have they ever had a female born ? ) . Could not see any Carrib. flamingo chicks and too far to see what was happening with Chileans . I see the netting top has gone .

Superb pair of caiman lizards and smoky jungle frog also seen . Male lesser Antillean iguana displaying to female . Phillipine croc. in pen next to aviaries showing itself - horrible colour of water . Got photo of tuatara .

Saw an adult Mallorcan midwife toad at side of pool , window far too dirty to try a photo .

Black jaguar seen in indoor 'Rainforest' exhibit . Pools have no fish anymore . I can't help feeling that more could be done with this house , as with RORA more exhibits for reptiles , amphibians and inverts. and perhaps an aviary or two .

Nice to see baby warty pigs , male of second pair was in end pen on buffalo side .

Butterfly House going up well , bigger than I expected . Could not get around path to see babirusa .

A female Buffy-headed Capuchin was born in 1996. There may have been more females but they've been listed either as unsexed, or males.

I know but if they replaced 1 or 2 rhinos with the hippos it would fit in with the other african animals around.

and i'm sure visitors would like to see hippos aswell as the rhinos...I know i would

They may get to if they go ahead with some of the plans, but not taking any of the rhino paddocks. Using land that currently the zoo is renting out

Visited Chester yesterday but there is not much to report.

The goats have gone and the area is now an outside enclosure for the porcupines.

The butterfly house entrance is under construction and the pathway has been marked out. Also work is underway on the canalside walk.

The Wattled Cranes are now in the Crowned Crane enclosure and the Crowned Cranes are now in the Blue Crane enclosure.

There is a JBC on the site of the new walk-through aviary but no sign of any building work being undertaken, although staff were trimming nearby willow trees.

As for the arrivals and breedings it seems all quiet. I couldn't see any flamingo chicks which is unusual.

The female okapi is cycling again

Is the female okapi having the choice of the 2 males to breed with, or are the zoo going to breed with the older male that was recently brought in?

Seems a bit pointless sending the male up there from Marwell if they are not going to try and breed him with the Stuma.

There problem with Mbuti was that he was still on the young size when they tried to breed them and lacked experience in mounting females. So if the breeding loan doesn't work out, hopefully if Mbuti was watching he picked a few tips up ;)

current rhinos at Chester

Still with the young female arriving they still have 7 at this moment in time.

Has another female arrived? Nobody has posted that either, have they? If she's there now do you know her name etc?

I don't know if she's arrived yet, but jelle posted a while back that her name was Malindi from Magdeburg (born in 2005).
