Zoo Augsburg News from Augsburg

Augsburg Zoo's oldest elephant, female Targa, died today at the age of 67. Targa is survived by two other female elephants, Louise and Frosja, who are 49 and 42 respectively.

Recently 2 male Hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas) were send to the German Primate Center (Deutsches Primatenzentrum GmbH) in Göttingen. The main reason for this move was the increased aggression within the 55-strong group mostly between young males. The group in Göttingen did not have any breeding males. According to the zoo the baboons will receive "
exemplary care and live in an environment that meets their needs.". Futhermore, these males will not be used in animal testing in Göttingen.

Lion brothers Altai and Dunay have arrived from Lisbon and have started to be on display yesterday. There weren’t any lions on display when I visited Augsburg last Sunday.

On the start of March the zoo received two takin brothers from Pairi Daiza along with a bearded dragon and three Standing’s day geckos from a private owner.

The plans for the Himalayan area of the zoo are largely complete. I'll summarize the article, which is also very short, in English.
It is expected to be built from January 2025 to July 2026 and is expected to cost €5,500,000. The area extends from the water buffalo enclosure through the ibex enclosure to the mandrill enclosure. A walk-in aviary for Himalayan Monals, Derby's Parakeets and Pére David's Rock Squirrels and enclosures for Snow Leopards, Red Pandas, Markhors, Himalayan Tahrs and Takins are planned.

According to the zoo’s newsletter (which I found out through Zoo Freunde forums), the zoo has spectacled weavers, a species making a return to Europe. The animals are in quarantine, as of the publication of the newsletter, and will be exhibited in the tropical hall. This addition is already listed on ZTL.
