Birdland Park & Gardens News from Birdland

All 4 chicks have now hatched and doing well. A couple have issues with splayed legs but this is being rectified by tying them together for a couple of days. The first 2 have put on over 50 grams in weight in 8 days, the 3rd chick hatched yesterday (31st May) and the 4th this morning (already feeding well):)

Updates:

The 4 flamingo chicks are doing well and have been moved to the Flamingo shed so they can have more room to excercise.

The King Penguins now have 4 eggs and the Humboldts are sitting again.

Chicks from Blue Magpie, Azure Winged Magpie, Crowned Plover, Scared Ibis, Waldrapp Ibis, Red Billed Starling and Turtle Doves

Both pairs of Hammerkops are sitting as are the Red Fronted Macaws, Golden Conures, White Naped Cranes, Burrowing Owls and Striated Caracara

At which age do you want to mix them with the group? And is there any breeding activity in any of your two adult flocks?

And regarding King Penguins - do you hand-rear all hatched chicks or do you leave it sometimes to the parents?

They still have a lot of growing to do before we mix them with the adults. The Greaters have begun nest building over the last couple of weeks and mating attempts have been seen. The Chileans show no interest as yet


With the Kings we try and parent rear if we can, we have occassionally used foster parents as well

Greater Flamingo chicks now starting to feed themselves

This was taken tonight (9th of July) and was the first time we had seen them take the pellets :):):)

This guy (or gal) hatched on May 24th weighing in at 73 grams. Today (9th of July) it weighed in at over 1 kg :)

The newly refurbished Tropical House is more or less ready for the public now. The theme of the building is eggs and explains how not only birds lay eggs. Therefore it now houses the following species:

Corn Snake
Bearded Dragon
Standing Day Gecko
Brown Anole
Green Anole
American Tree Frog
Green & Black Poison Dart Frog
Axolotl
African Giant Millipede
Emperor Scorpion
A species of Tarantula (not sure which?)
Peruphasma shustei (sp?)
Tiger Barb
Clown Loach
Catfish sp
Penguin Tetra (naturally :p)
Bali Mynah
Emerald Dove
Scaled Quail
Greater Hill Mynah

Harvest mice to follow.

There are also egg displays, a small childrens interaction area and a lecture theatre is half way to completion.



On another topic, the 3 remaining Greater Flamingo chicks are now being weaned and starting to spend more and more time outside :)

All King Penguin eggs have been infertile this year :( but 2 of the 5 eggs involved very young birds which is encouraging for the future

Edinburgh only had one king penguin egg which did not hatch - I think it was infertile - so no UK king penguin hatchings for 2009 .

unfortunately lost the youngest chick to an infection :(
 
Birdland currently has 2 fully feathered Hammerkop chicks at the point of fledging. This is the first time we have got to this point for a looooong time

The 3 flamingo chicks continue to thrive and are now spending time in the river although not yer mingling with the adults.

Bank Holiday numbers were good despite the damp weather
 
First King egg laid today :). The parents both in their 30s (the male was in Batman Returns back in 89)

Also have the new Marshmouth Nature Reserve open, still a work in progress but Grass Snakes galore
 
Birdland-winter losses.

Disappointing trip to Birdland,although an excellent place a number of losses over the winter cold period have heavily depleted numbers-

1/The Toucan House contains no toucans -all were lost in the cold spell.
At last visit at least 2 pairs of red billed toucan on display?

2/All storks and cranes were in singltons ,a number were displaying to
other species of stork.Only the marabou storks were paired.

3/There was only one cassowary who was very arthritiic and could
hardly walk.A very sad sight.The other was again lost in the cold spell.

4/The desert house had at least three planes of glass missing and it
appeared that a number of the bee-eaters had escaped.

5/The tropical house had been replaced by an education centre -although
very grand and clearly a very expensive project it had only a very few
birds etc.The theme of the egg seemed totally lost on the target
audience who simply ran through.The Tropical House was a sad loss.

6/At least four flamingoes had been lost in the cold spell.

7/On a more positive note 2 pairs of ground hornbills were present with
a new breeding male -inhabiting a cage shoe-horned between the
existing cages.

8/A very large chalet type building for refreshments on the lawn between
the wader aviary and hornbills slightly over powered the area.A new
vulture aviary has just been started near-by.

Still a magic place-however as it was June I felt some more could
have been done to recover from the winter ?.
