An excellent news from Furuvik! For some weeks ago: 1.0 Western common chimpanzee called; Tjobbe have arrived from Veszprém zoo in Hungary. The plan is to breed him with the female, Linda who is a Western common chimpanzee too. :)

The park is to integrate him with the park´s 5 other Chimps, including the male Santino. It can to be hard to integrate two adult male chimps (Santino & Tjobbe), but the park is supported by Charlotte McDonald, Twycross who is an expert at integrate Chimpanzee.

What is the current status of the chimps at Furuviksparken / Gavle?
(I was also under the impression that there was another pure verus female in Maria Magdalena (born in Boras Zoo in 2000)?)

The current chimps in Furuvik are:
Santino - Male B 1978 München (Leader)
Tjobbe - Male B 2003 Arnhem
Linda - Female B 1984 Liberia
Maria Magdalena - Female B 2000 Borås
Manda - Female B 2004 Kolmården
Selma - Female B 2008 Kolmården

I haven't too much knowledge - But yes, Maria Magdalena is sure a Westen chimp also because what I have seen from the studbook that her parent: Jonathan and Malin are siblings. Malin left Borås with another female last year for Valencia, while Jonathan (leader in Borås) was joined by two new females from Chesters (Westen chimpanzees) in his group. :)

1.1 Red ruffed lemur have arrived. This is a new species for the park(and the country) and Furuvik hopes to get lemur babies from the couple in future. The name of the lemurs are, Mangoro and Mandry. :)

Some great news!

A record year for Furuvik this year, over 304 103 visitors has visited the park this season (20/5-20/8)! This is the highest visitor number since the park was opened in 1900.

Tidernas bästa säsong i Furuvik!

The Swedish, University of Lund has also made an interesting study of reaction between zoo visitors and Chimpanzee.

Both chimpanzees and humans spontaneously imitate each other's actions

Torsten is named after a keeper who have worked with the chimps in the zoo for a long time, prety much since the time of the dinosaurs ;)
