Zoo de la Palmyre: birth of an Hamlyn's monkey

The species, which originates from eastern DRC and western Rwanda, has less than 30 representatives in Europe.

It's a precious birth. Classified as vulnerable on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) list the Hamlyn monkey is in decline in its range from eastern DRC to western Rwanda, says the zoo. " The species is threatened by deforestation and poaching for bushmeat. "

This year in Europe, only two births were registered, including this one. The species has less than 30 representatives in seven zoological institutions.

Hamlyn's cercopithectic baby is recognizable by a bright orange coat, unlike that of adults, olive-grey. They feed on fruits, seeds, leaves, bark and insects and spend two thirds of their time on the ground.

" Although he is still firmly attached to his mother's womb, he is becoming more and more active ", says the zoo.
