Linton Zoological Gardens News from Linton Zoo

Visited Linton a few days ago. First time since the Autumn so great to be back. A few observations.
  • New lion extension is coming on very well. Appears nearly finished with a few bits still left to do and will be an impressive addition to the current enclosure.
  • Building work going on next to current zebra yard.
  • New little aviary next to the Blyth's hornbill aviary containing a female. Looks to be part of an introductory set up.
  • Older lion enclosure and 'animal house' still out of bounds due to covid restrictions.
All in all great to see works continuing around the zoo given the current circumstances.

Are the plush crested jays on show?
 
At Linton today - very sunny and warm. Not been here before and it’s an interesting smaller collection. It’s always quite a mellow experience to visit the smaller collections vs the 4 people deep at the tigers at the big ones on a hot day!

Layout makes it seem uncrowned lots of the paths are natural like walking in a wood and there have been a few times I’ve been completely alone at some of the exhibits.

Some good fresh paint. Signage is very informative and well placed - great to see such a lot of information on some unusual animals.

The hornbills in several enclosures are a real highlight and they’ve obviously had a lot of success with breeding them. Great to watch.

Good to see the Scottish wildcats - were on my list as haven’t seen them before and one of the reasons I came - exciting to see - saw two being very active around the enclosure.

Slightly odd dinosaur placement around the place but the kids that are here seem to enjoy it so hard to begrudge it.

The young tapir is certainly a good size now but still has some stripes. Nice enclosure for the three tapirs and a good space to see them from lots of angles.

Hadn’t realised they have 4 lions (thought it was 2) so that was great.

The enclosures seem well placed for viewing and the animals though looking at it it will be good when they fund the new snow leopard enclosure.

They actually have 6 lions, the other 2 are currently offshow (since pandemic) behind the snow leopards as they are on a dead end path
 
Was reading this thread

Lions mating in missionary position

as there was very active mating going on with two of the lions at Linton and I was surprised to see the pair noted in that thread mating in that way.

Googled it and this forum thread came up first which was handy. Not seen or heard of it before but can see from that and other searches that it is a bit unusual.

Although there was a lot of activity I guess Safina’s likelihood of producing more cubs is lower now she is around 15?

Safina will not be having any more cubs, I am fairly sure of that
 
After speaking to a Linton staff member they told me that riziki and karla are doing well at their old age. They said over the last couple of years rizi in particular has become intolerant of the occasional person wishing to provoke a reaction from him , so we have taken the decision to keep them off show , a sort of retirement from the public eye.

Sorry to be a pain but it's a big help for less regular visitors to certain collections to post the species not just names of individual animals. Am assuming from a comment further back in this thread that they are lions?

That sounds like a good thing to do. Will miss being able to see them but a deserved retirement! Thanks for sharing.
