So, it is ... and the media are well to blame for misinformation and libel on a grand scale here. Dr. Encke also seems to have received some very personal threats vis a vis his public awareness efforts in the media. I thought there was a law to protect individuals from this kind of vileness.

@Batto: I share your opinion. You can probably say a few things about Encke, but not that he's a coward. He stands for his beliefs, does not bring in unnecessary emotions and was and is always facing his oponents (or shall I say enemies?) in opposite to the responsible persons of a particular zoo in a british metropole. And regarding Antenne Bayern: Let me say it in the famous words of Klaus Kinski in "Doctor Zhivago", when a red army soldier praises a corps that will attend the train to Siberia with Zhivago and his family: "Das sind alles Idio...."

From Brazil 2 captive-bred Harpy's arrived ( Zooparc Roberto Ribas Lange ) arrived at Nürnberg and are now housed at Gut Mittelbüg ( quarantaine and breeding-center of the Zoo ).
A great acquisition and bodes well for future breeding (2.1 + 0.0.2 additions sex of each?)!

I wonder what are the plans for all these birds as it seems quite clear now that pairing is better when the birds are young. Moreover there is a lack of females for pairing.
They send one of the males on breeding loan to another zoo.
I am pretty sure the facility might be another major German zoo, must check though.
I saw in an article that he was sent to South-America.
They sent several harpye to South American zoos in various nations there over time. I must do my re-search again (as I read it last weekish) and that may take some time (before I get around to it).
Now, I have really got to start studying for my tests next week proper. Lots of reading up as well as basic picturing study material in my head / mind photographically ... so to speak.

Nuernberg Zoo has initiated an EEP for harpye this year. At the moment, Zooparc de Beauval owns one pair, a male bird in Zoo Berlin and the 5 birds at Nuernberg Zoo.
They are supporting 3 projects in Brasil dealing with:
A) a genetics project with the Universidade Federal do Espiritu Santo in Brasil;
B) a further AI reproduction project with Universität Gießen;
and
C) a further project called „Projeto Harpia“ to protect nesting pairs and sites of harpye in Brasil.
Zoo Nuernberg has provided technical equipment like camera traps and video cams.
Also, Zoo Nuernberg has provided offspring from their pair to zoos in Ecuador, Peru and Brazil.

Europes oldest Red river hog has died at of more then 18 years.
Heidi was born on July 5 2002 at Salzburg ( Austria ) and came 2005 to Nürnberg.
On Jan. 4 2021 it was decided to put her asleep because of age-problems.

Mid-January the Bearded vultures have laid a clutch of 2 eggs. Nürnberg is taking part of the re-introduction-programm for the species so its well possible that if young hatch they will spend most of their live(s) in complete freedom

They have bred many hatchlings for release to date!
I hope but not for sure. I follow a webinar from the Vulture Conservation Foundation last november and it was told that the priority was to consolidate the captive population to insure they have enough breeding pairs for the future released.so its well possible that if young hatch they will spend most of their live(s) in complete freedom
That is goal 1 every breeding season before any releases are considered. It depends upon the number of hatchlings and which founder stock whether the birds remain in captivity or are candidates for release. This year, I think the goal is 5 release sites, with the new one in Germany, near Berchtesgaden.
