Tiergarten Nürnberg News from Nurnberg

According to the 'Zoo Grapevine' magazine, Nürnberg has received 2.2 juvenile Arabian Chameleons (Chamaeleo arabicus), as reported by Diana Koch, the zoo's Curator. Where they came from, when they arrived, and whether or not they are onshow was not mentioned, but they are on the only members of their species in Europe and possibly (judging by the fact that ZTL does not even have a listing for them) the only members of their species to have ever been kept on the continent. Onshow or not, they are a very exciting addition!

They arrived at the zoo last November.
Mea culpa: I forgot to ask Diana whether they were on show yet or not.

In a zoo maybe - but they are certainly not the only ones kept in Europe.

Probably one of the Gulf country zoo collections.
 
As mentioned in the ZooFreunde forum, the goitered gazelle enclosure has been emptied. The plan is to merge the enclosure with the peccary enclosure and later add rheas. On my visit today I saw the peccaries exploring the old gazelle enclosure.

The species is, however, far from common in the European exotic pet trade. I haven't seen any specimens be offered at the major reptile expos or the commercial sellers' lists in recent years. Neither have I personally witnessed it being kept in any European husbandry, may it be private or zoos.
Breeding success is rare:

62 new species within a year with (unless I am missing something) no major new exhibits opened is nothing short of outstanding. The staff at Nürnberg must be very passionate about growing their collection, and deserve much credit for this.

Tiergarten Nürnberg on Instagram: "Kaum sind die Geschwister ausgezogen, ist schon der nächste Nachwuchs da: Unser Karpatenluchs-Weibchen Desari hat Anfang Juni zwei Jungtiere zur Welt gebracht. Inzwischen spitzen die Kleinen ab und zu aus der Felsnische hervor. Glück und Geduld braucht ihr aber trotzdem, wenn ihr sie sehen möchtet. Welches Geschlecht die beiden haben, ist noch nicht klar, da die Tiere bei der Aufzucht nicht gestört werden sollen. Im Frühjahr letzten Jahres hat Desari bereits drei Männchen erfolgreich aufgezogen. Erst vor zwei Wochen hat das letzte aus diesem Wurf den Tiergarten verlassen und ist in den Nationalpark Harz umgezogen. Wusstet ihr, dass Luchse bei Geburt noch blind sind und nur etwa 250 bis 300 Gramm wiegen? Lange wird es aber nicht mehr dauern, bis die Kleinen die ersten Erkundungen allein wagen. Und damit steigen für euch auch die Chancen, sie zu Gesicht zu bekommen. Übrigens: Nicht nur die Luchse haben in den letzten Wochen Zuwachs bekommen.
