A 12-years old Komodo dragon Rakastan arrived to Poznan old zoo to make company for female Rinca.

On Sunday, the Poznań Old Zoo presented Rakastan, a 12-year-old Komodo dragon that arrived at the Poznań (west-central Poland) garden two weeks ago from Prague, Czech Republic.

A few days ago, the Poznań Zoo showed off its new resident. The Polish garden announced on social media that the komodo dragon named Rakastan was born in Los Angeles, from where he first went to Leipzig, then to Prague, and less than two weeks ago he was brought to the capital of the Greater Poland region.

Komodo dragons are the largest lizards in the world. In the wild, on the Indonesian islands of Komodo, Rinca, and Flores, there are just over 1,300 individuals. The dragons reach up to 3 meters in length, half of which is the tail. These animals can weigh even more than 150 kg. The resident Rakastan currently weighs close to 100 kg.

A few years ago I visited this zoo and they were building a new pavilion. If I remember correctly, it was going to be to house turtles. Any news about this?

This house was opened two or three years ago. It’s nothing spectacular. Visitors don’t go inside, they look at the animals through the windows. Two-thirds of it is home to four or five species of tortoises. Rest is winter shelter for red-eared sliders.

What species are we talking about?

Is the plan to breed the Komodo dragons?

I’m not sure I remember exactly: African spurred tortoise, Leopard tortoise, Marginated tortoise, Radiated tortoise.
Few words about Komodo dragons. For now, the female and male are kept separately. It's hard to say more, the zoo doesn’t inform about its intentions but I think they plan to breed dragons. I guess that's why the male was brought in.

I read repeatedly in Polish media that the city and the new zoo director of Poznan are disscussing possible closure of the Stare Zoo for good. Due to mounting costs that are not covered by revenues. It seems also that local people are vehemently against its closure.

Could any Polish member comment on it? Will it close?

The zoo is in very poor condition when I visited it in september.

Revenues are absent because entrance is free.

I guess the Reptilehouse (this did require payment) could be kept, as it is in good condition and construction/renovation works were going on.

Do you mean the entry fee for both Stare and Nove Zoo (or just the Stare)? What are the maintenance costs for the Stare Zoo? Is there still a representative animal collection or not?

I mean the Stare Poznan zoo. It is free except for the Reptile house (8 pln or 2 euro)

Nowe Poznan zoo is a paid entrance and very good.

I am in the process of writing a trip report and hope to start launching this by the end of this month.

A news article reports that indeed majority of the ca 1000 animals that still live in the old zoo should leave the place within next 2 years. The zoo will become a free public park space.

Currently, the Old Zoo is home to over 1,000 animals, including: 144 mammals, 78 birds, 242 reptiles, 82 amphibians and 516 fish. The vast majority of these animals will soon be moving. However, these changes will not happen in a few months. It will take two years or even more for the old zoo to become a completely new place.

Thus, if I interpret both articles correctly, the vivarium would remain in het old zoo. That seems logical since they were still renovating some parts in September. Overall, it looked very good there, unlike the rest of the zoo.

That the zoo would continue to be loss-making is not so difficult since admission is free.
