UPDATE: Baby Tapir at Salzburg Zoo is a Girl!

Salzburg Zoo's new baby South American Tapir that ZooBorns first covered HERE is growing and thriving. Though it was born on March 1, vets only recently determined that it's a girl! Since then, the zoo has been asking the public to submit names for her and will decide on one very soon.

In the mean time, Mom Bibi has had to keep a watchful eye, since her little one has been into all sorts of mischief. What kind? You can see for yourself on the zoo's webcam, found on their website's homepage. You can tune in to see the the baby napping, playing or cuddling with Bibi, or nursing as seen on the webcam yesterday morning.

The IUCN lists the South American Tapir as vulnerable, due to the 30% population decline that has occurred over the past three generations. They are threatened by deforestation, competition with grazing livestock, and hunting. As large foragers, they are especially sensitive to habitat disruption.

On March 18 2013 the wihite rhinos had a medical check. As Yeti and also Tamu were in estrus they did an AI with sperm taken earlier that day fom Athos. Hope both females got pregnant. :-)

Thank you for your Information Jola (although I don't know what NORTHERN white rhinos has to do with Zoo Salzburg?)
 
I am sure she meant SWR as that is what they are. Sad to see that no wait for the male to do what he has been acquired for recently. If AI they might have tried Benno for his genes ... too.

You're right, I meant SWR. AFAIK I know they did a medical check if the females are fertile. During the check they decided to do AIs because the experts said that day was a good day for AI. I have no idea why they didn't do that when Benno was still there. You know I hate rhino transfers when it is not really necessary.

My info is that Benno was a no good breeder. However, I do feel his genes are very important to the European population. New bull Athos is just getting into the right age modus, but may need a competitor bull.
 
Snow leopard cubs and a great enclsoure! Plus the zoo stays open until 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays in August. I sooooo want to book a flight to Salzburg.
 
The zoo is well worth a visit. Its location is stunning and alongside some average enclosures there are some excellent exhibits - the cheetah enclosure and surrounding African area is outstanding with the Alps as a backdrop.

I absolutely agree. I visited the zoo late November. Had also a talk with the white rhinos' headkeeper. The first AI done this March was not successful. Tamu und Yeti had a 2nd AI with fresh sperm taken from Athos early September 2013. Hope it worked this time. Athos is a bit interested in the females, but he is not interested in mating ...

Flights and train tickets are booked for early next year! Of course the zoo will not be open late in mid winter, but I am hoping for some nice snow photos. :)
(Even though I hate the cold, but we must suffer for the sake of art ;)).

Good news and yet bad news - I will be there in about three weeks and the cub will probably still be too small to be on exhibit. I am going to just miss its debut! Pumas are the only big cat species I have not photographed as a cub either (I have a juvenile, but not cubs). Maybe I will contact them to see if being an American zoo docent and a member of the Feline Conservation Federation has any pull for behind the scenes...
 
After a run of great escapes from the cheetah residents of Salzburg Zoo, the big cat enclosure has been rebuilt in an effort to prevent further breakouts.

For the third time in two years in April a cheetah broke out from the enclosure, managing to crawl through a pond, scale a wall and climb under an electric fence to freedom.

"Ginger" the female cheetah left two cubs behind as she went for an adventure around the Salzburg's tourist attraction, only to return after ten minutes back to the enclosure. But that was not before she was spotted having a curious wander around by visitors enjoying a day at the zoo, who quickly raised the alarm.

Her easy escape came as even more of a surprise to zoo keepers as the enclosure had already been renovated - at the cost of over 200,000 EUR - into a "ultra-modern, absolutely safe, animal enclosure" following earlier breakouts in the summer of 2012.

Now, further safety precautions have been introduced, including a second electric fence and a deeper pond, at the cost of 60,000 EUR.

Big cat experts were brought in to recommend changes to the enclosure, including European Endangered Species Program Coordinator and cheetah expert Lars Versteegde.
