Tiergarten Schönbrunn News from Schonbrunn

I see that I have made some good predictions recently...

The zoo has just gotten the permission and 24 million euros in federal funding to expand the zoo by over 4 hectares (towards the area above the Tiroler farm house). They will create a novel state-of-the-art African Elephant complex there (mixed with other species). There is no timeline for this project yet. Another megaproject (30 million euros) is the new aquarium building (5 floors!) to be built between the rhinos and the rainforest house. Originally envisaged for 2023, but it seems rather unlikely they will keep to the original planning... The aquarium will feature a 2 million liter shark tank, which is easily the largest in a German-speaking main zoo (only Ozeaneum Stralsund currently has a larger tank) and a living coral reef. The building is designed to be integrated in the present slope in a way it doesn't interrupt any sightlines (the whole zoo is part of the UNESCO world heritage site of Schoenbrunn castle)....

Nothing yet, the current occupants of the site of the future elephant enclosure (the federal forest office) first have to leave and that won't happen before next year it seems. So it will take some time.

In the meantime the current director has a lot of trouble with the Austrian media from naming animals to owning weapons. The aquarium as envisaged by the previous director probably won't happen, but a new aquarium will be constructed on the current site by a Hagenbeck design company (no guesses to the last name of Vienna's current director....).

Some good news for us is that the current insect house will be remodelled into something reminiscent of an airport. Here, part of the confiscated reptiles and amphibians the zoos takes care for will find a home. That includes some very rare species as far as zoos are concerned, so there will likely be some exciting stuff on show, as these animals have been of show until now.

First successful breeding of king penguin:

The two chicks hatched July 23 and August 5:

World's Oldest Zoo Welcomes King Penguin Twin Chicks For The First Time Ever In Vienna, Austria

This marks the first-ever occurrence of twin king penguin chicks in the zoo's history since acquiring these penguins in 1976. Zoo director Stephan Hering-Hagenbeck expressed excitement over this rare feat, emphasizing that breeding king penguins successfully in zoos is a noteworthy achievement.

Also this year the zoo received animls that were confiscated by the customs, this time 88 animals from Namibia. Among which were the Namib chirping geckos (Ptenopus carpi) making Schönbrunn the only zoo in Europe with this species. Currently the zoo is refurbishing their
House of Horrors into a building that will house all the confiscated species, this is planned to open in 2024. The house will have an airport feeling to represent where the animals were confiscated. The zoo has already bred 85% of all the species that have been confiscated by the customs.

Foxes managed to get inside Cuban flamingo enclosure at night (birds were not moved into a nigth barn and hot wire was off due to a mistake) and killed 13 out of 15 birds. The surviving 2 birds were transported to Zoo Schmiding.

This is really painfull.

On the 22nd and 27th of March a Burchell's zebra (Equus quagga burchellii) was born.

The former Himalayan tahr (Hemitragus jemlahicus) and Barbary sheep (Ammotragus lervia) enclosures will be combined. This larger enclosure will house the himalauan tahr, but also Shensi takins (Budorcas taxicolor bedfordi). A new species for Schönbrunn.

With the barbary sheep enclosure are you referring to the recently renovated one? Or was there another enclosure I'm not aware of?
