Tiergarten Schönbrunn News from Schonbrunn

The zoo has given further details about the aquarium which is planned to be open in 2028. During the construction the animals will be transferred to the aquatic research station at Maxingstraße.

The reptiles will be placed in the desert house, the rainforest building, or the new conservation building. Very few species will be given away.

The zoo also has a separate website for the aquarium ( www.artenschutzaquarium.at )

Pläne für neues Aquarium präsentiert – Tiergarten Schönbrunn

Announcement video in German:

This is promising to be spectacular, it won't have a megatank, but from the info there is already it seems like it could be a standalone aquarium too (which it won't, it will be included in the regular entry fee.

The following zones are planned:

Freshwater, a number of aquaria from a cave set-up to a large Amazon tank (525.000 litres and 15 metres long), will likely hold quite some rare species, as the zoo currently already keeps & breeds some 60 endangered freshwater fish behind the scenes.

Coral reef a 120.000 litre tank with living corals

Jellyfish a number of tanks containing some of the 80! jellyfish species the zoo already keeps. It should include the largest jellyfish kreisel in the world.

Conservation laboratory showcasing endangered species like pupfish and the indigenous European mudminnow

Octopus & friends showing a range of octopus, cuttlefish & even squids

Seahorses & friends showcasing a range of seahorses, including sea dragons, and pipefish

The Deep with chimaeras, giant spider crabs, giant isopods and more

Open Sea a 2.35 million litre tank with sharks, eagle rays and more.

Mangrove with species like four-eyed fish, archerfish and mudskippers

The zoo has already invested 4 million euros in a temporary holding space for all the current aquarium residents. Construction should start in little less than a year from now.

This all sounds really promising! I hope they can live up to the expectations they are creating!

Does anyone have a species list for the Desert House? I can't find one on zootierliste, unless I'm looking in the wrong place? Thanks in advance!

Zootierliste lists such separate attractions that clearly belong to the same zoo under the main one, so the same as with the aquarium of Zoo Berlin, which can also be visited as a separate attraction.

The species list is not very long, based solely on memory it should more or less be as follows for vertebrates:

- European souslik
- Round eared sengi
- Naked mole rat

- White-fronted bee-eater
- Amethyst glossy starling
- Namaqua dove
- Oriental white-eye

- Gila monster
- Aldabra giant tortoise
- Armadillo lizard
- Baja California rock lizard
- Carter's rock gecko
- Northern black-tailed rattlesnake
- South African bowsprit tortoise

- Colorado river toad
- Kaiser's spotted newt

- Blind cavefish & it's aboveground counterpart
- Garra rufa
- Some sort of pupfish

The zoo lost five American bison to sheep herpes virus. The surviving calf had to be euthanized on welfare grounds and also since the zoo didn’t couldn’t transfer the animal to another herd or farm to prevent a potentially spreading the disease. The Ouessant sheep are considered to be possible transmitters. The zoo currently is not keeping any bison.

Any more information on the possible linke between the Quessant sheet and ovid herpes virus? I suspect the zoo vet team will have performed post mortems and taken samples from the local and/or zoo sheep?

Are Long-tailed broadbills and Blue-winged pittas visible?

Blue-winged pitta is unsigned in the S-American section of the bird house.

Long-tailed broadbill is semi on show. It is visible from the upper polar bear viewpoint. They are in a small indoor aviary at the lower level attached to the rainforest house:

In November a female Reticulated giraffe (Giraffa camelopardalis reticulata) was born. Sadly the young passed away two weeks later, she wasn't growing as fast as other young giraffes.

In November both the Red pandas and the Asian small-clawed otters moved to a new enclosure which can be found between the Regenwaldhaus and Eisbärenwelt.

At the start of November a new species arrived at the zoo, namely Greater guinea pigs (Cavia magna). They can be found in the Affenhaus.

In November a Linnaeus' two-toed sloth (Choloepus didactylus) was born.
