Really sad news, but I ask me,what are they doing in vienna to avoid any more deaths of animals?:(

Zoo elephant impregnated with frozen sperm
14 August 2012

An African elephant in Vienna Zoo has been impregnated using frozen sperm from a male living in the wild, in what the zoo says is a world first.

Pregnancy has been achieved before elsewhere using frozen sperm in two cases, once with an African elephant and once with an Asian one, but both times the males were in captivity and the foetuses died, a zoo spokeswoman told AFP on Monday.

"If this calf is born it will be the first time worldwide that this works with frozen sperm," she said.

"Already this is the first successful insemination using frozen sperm from a wild male. This is something very special."

Tonga, the 26-year-old elephant, is nine months into her 22-month pregnancy. The sperm came from a wild bull elephant in South Africa.

Using sperm from wild elephants is seen as particularly important in order to widen the narrowing gene pool of elephants living in zoos and animal parks around the world caused by a shortage of suitable bulls living in captivity.

More information including ultrasound images is due to be presented at a news conference on Tuesday.

Artificial insemination using sperm that is frozen and then thawed has worked in other mammals, including rhinos, but with elephants, an endangered species, it has proven problematic.

Vienna Zoo teamed up with the Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research in Germany, Zooparc de Beauval in France and Pittsburgh Zoo in the United States for the project.

Some sad news again, mommie sea lion "Enya" died of cardiac insufficiency on Sept 6, 2012. Her baby daughter "Lunita", born this July, will be hand reared by the keepers.

Some sad news again, mommie sea lion "Enya" died of cardiac insufficiency on Sept 6, 2012. Her baby daughter "Lunita", born this July, will be hand reared by the keepers.

Baby girl Lunita was hand-reared, she is doing very well, she even joined the adult group of seals.

Orang-utan Sol had a stillborn early November 2012. It was her first baby. She was mourning several days and carried her baby around with her before she let the keepers take away her dead baby.

Panda cub Fu Hu arrived at BFX on Nov 8, 2012. The quarantine is over, but he hasn't been moved to his new enclosure yet. Find some recent pics of Fu Hu here:

Giant panda cub Fu Hu, born at Zoo Vienna, moved to China last November, was sent with female cub Cai Yun to Jinan City Zoo today. It's that zoo, that gas poisoned its 21 year-old female panda #20 aka Quan Quan by an "accident" in 2010. I'm pretty worried about Fu Hu being moved to that zoo. He has just settled in at BFX a bit. By the way, the zoo will rename Fu Hu and Cai Yun ...

Do Black Billed Amazon Parrots (Amazona agilis) are now on display at the zoo? If so, where can I see them?

They are on display. I saw them in February. Even if they are not outside their in-house aviary has a big glass window :). They are in the row of aviaries filled with parrots behind the coatis.
