Apparently an 'eagle' - news website shows a stock picture of a bald eagle but I doubt there are many of those flying around Vienna - has eaten a tortoise.

A tortoise became a crunchy snack for an eagle after it was airlifted from a zoo in the Austrian capital.

Felix the tortoise, 15, disappeared without trace from his enclosure at Vienna's Schoenbrunn Zoo, and keepers say he was eaten by an eagle or similar large bird of prey that had been seen in the area recently.

The former owner of the tortoise, Vida Hochleitner, 37, has accused the zoo of not looking after the animal properly.

Just a few weeks ago the zoo was involved in another scandal when one of the polar bears ate a peacock that had flown into its enclosure.

Hochleitner had handed five tortoises over to the zoo after the death of her husband and donated 100,000 Euro for their care.

She said: "They took the money but apparently didn't look after the animals."
