If I am correct, this little zoo doesn’t even have it’s own thread?

This “grown out of hand backyard project” is one of my favorite little places in the Netherlands. The owners are passionate Indonesians with home-sickness, which results in a very well themed little park, with a choice species selection (asian palm civet, fishing cats, leopard cat, jungle maina, sumatran treepie, etc) and a choice menu at the little restaurant :)

I visit often and today was my first time for a while. Some observations from today:
- the small greenhouse is closed. On some of my visits the last year orso, this sometimes held a fire-tufted barbet. According to personnel, this bird goes off-show sometimes to allow the smaller birds in the greenhouse to breed. No idea if it’s still there…
- the lone sumatran treepie (Dendrocitta occipitalis) is still going strong. It’s not signed, but still there…
- new species was a couple of very nervous asian pied starlings (sturnus contra). I’m not keeping an exact list of birds seen, but a first for me if I’m correct. They were held in an aviary that previously held pallas’ squirrels (not seen).
- a few birds seem to have left the collection or were bts (two species of laughing thrushes, red-billed blue magpies, red-billed leiothrix).

Too bad the weather was s****, or it would have been an enjoyable afternoon. At least the food was fine :)

Sounds like a fascinating little place. Any chance of a detailed review and species list:)?

Not sure about a detailed review, but I’ve just spend some time updating Zootierliste. It’s now at least 95% accurate (bar for a few species that could be bts and all the species kept in the greenhouse).

This truly is one of the best small zoos in the country. Had contact with the owners during the beginning of the pandemic. Such a shame you can't reach it by public transport.

Well, you can, if you go to the busstop Steenwijk, however you then just have to walk a short hour to Taman Indonesia :p

There is a small seperate indoor exhibit that at the end of last year was empty (it held treeshrews recently, but the treeshrews moved to a small exhibit at the restaurant).

Then the “small” (it’s about 20m by 10m-ish?, so it’s not tiny) greenhouse itself housed crested partridge, sooty-headed bulbuls, white-rumped shama, a small grey pigeon species (probably crested) and a few finch-like birds. Zootierliste lists scaly-breasted munia, zebra finches and red avadavat which sounds right. It housed the fire-tufted barbet on and off..

Inside there is a small exibit on the ground for blue-tongued skink. It’s also home to an array of spices (or at least plants that lead to certain spices). It’s a nice spot to hang around and spot the birds (and enjoy the heat if it’s cold outside).
