Dunno about the deer. The ad for the Mast Farm trip I took said they kept them at the off-exhibit facility, but I didn't see any there. Just a grevy's zebra, a bactrian camel, some llamas, jacob's sheep, tons of cheetahs and some miscellaneous cranes. No tufted deer, though.

When did you visit Mast Farm? Maybe they have been moved back to the zoo since that time? If I remember correctly they used to be exhibited in the exhibit that houses wallabies and emus and that once held Zebra Duikers.

Thanks for the blog link. I wonder what they will do with the old interpretive graphics panels? I think they should auction them off - I might even be interested in one myself.

I looked at the video on the zoo website about the cat house redo. He says towards the end that a new (presumably outdoor) puma exhibit will also open at the same time - May 2011. He then says it will showcase how far pumas can jump. Does anyone know if they are planning some type of activity or special feature to get them to jump? Or maybe just a graphic outside showing the distance? Or maybe is was just an off-the-cuff statement, as in they will have so much room they could jump if they want to.

Also did anyone catch that he said the new night hunters will showcase clouded leopards from Borneo? Clearly this is a slip of the tongue, since they have the mainland species (Neofelis nebulosa) and would not likely be able to get the island species (Neofelis diardii). If they did, I would have to book the first flight to Cincinnati after the exhibit opens! :D

I was at the farm on oct 9th and at the Zoo on Halloween, but didn't make it to Wildlife Canyon.

I wonder where they are putting the new puma exhibit. Maybe that Siberian lynx mesh offshoot could be enlarged or expanded. God knows that the mesh outdoor enclosures on that building need to be torn apart. They are truly sad. Speaking of sad, anyone seen that tiny cell in the Nocturnal House that the binturong has? It'll be so much better off in the new bldg.

My guess would be that the Tufted Deer are in Wildlife Canyon now then. I've heard (Don't know if it's true) that the Wallabies now have a yard in or around the new Children's Zoo so that would make sense for the Tufted Deer to return to their previous yard at the zoo if the Wallabies and Emus have moved out.

Well, according to the video the new Puma and Snow Leopard exhibits will be extended off the building where the current outdoor lynx, bobcat, and ocelot exhibits are. I wondered that myself about Puma jumping thing. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Yes! I agree the Binturong exhibit is horrible! I can't wait for them to move into Night Hunters!

On the note of Mast Farm, that's very interesting that you visited the farm! I've been trying to find some information on it but I haven't gotten too far on the internet.

I wonder where they are putting the new puma exhibit.

If you watch the video, the director is standing on the edge of a path across from the mesh exhibits you mentioned. He says where he is standing will be a new puma exhibit. He is standing right on the far edge of the path next to some existing foliage, so it looks like it will extend there (an area that is not currently an exhibit).

They're now listing African rock pythons on the NH species list. I like. I wonder what other little surprises they'll have in store come May.

Hi

I'm going to be in Cincinnati again before the year is out. Do any of you regulars know where the cats are during construction?

Looking at the above plan, im a little worried that the internal enclosures are not going to be enlarged?
I was hoping the zoo would opt for fewer species and combine the exhibits to enlarge them. Are they going to stick the concrete or will there be a natural substrate?

Perhaps my biggest concern is the exhibit will be nocturnal so the animals will be deprived of natural light. Please don't get me wrong I am a huge advocate of the zoo and the pioneering work they have done and I have many friends that work there still.. However, I’d rather see 1 species given spacious and modern accommodation than 15 crammed into this building.

I know it will be the cougars that get the largish outdoor enclosure I was hoping it would be the Clouded Leopards given the fact that the breeding program has been kick started with the imports out of Chonburi.

Thanks

someone from the Zoo, answered that question in the zoo blog:
Most of the animals have moved into temporary homes in behind-the-scenes areas around the Zoo, and a few have been transferred to other institutions.

I'm headed to the zoo this weekend so I'll see about the Tufted Deer and get some pictures of the various recent updates that are yet to be represented in the gallery ( Dragons, children's zoo, new Flamingo exhibit, etc).

Sure :) There are a few in the gallery but not from all angles so I'll get a few more of the main yard. I don't think there are any pictures of Sabu's ( The bull) yard or many of the indoor enclosure. I'll get some of those as well.

The Cincinnati Zoo has unveiled two new members of its nursery, 8-week-old male cougars Joseph and Tecumseh.

The zoo said Thursday that the cougars were born Sept. 19 and are now on display in the facility's Children's Zoo Nursery.

The cubs weigh about 8.5 pounds and eat nearly half their weight in meat a day in four or five feedings. They will grow to about 140 to 200 pounds.

They soon will join the zoo's Cat Ambassador Program to prepare for roles as Animal Ambassadors in a Night Hunters exhibit planned for May.

The text makes an interesting comment. It says they will be ambassador animals but it also says they will be part of the new night hunters exhibit. These seemed contradictory to me at first. But maybe it is a clue to what we were discussing earlier about the exhibit showcasing pumas' jumping abilities. Perhaps there will be a jumping setup in the exhibit and they will use these trained pumas to demonstrate? Looking forward to some firsthand reports from those of you in the area next summer.
