Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News From the Cincinnati Zoo 2011 #2

Quoted so that the video would show. Edit: Cinzoo man beat me to it.

No, the Reptile House is certainly not the largest or most modern home for its inhabitants. Many of the enclosures are a little to far too small for the animals that they hold, especially for the Chinese Alligators, large snakes and lizards, and the young Galapagos Tortoises. Though I have to say, the behind the scenes area for the reptiles is larger. Just remember that the Reptile House was not built for reptiles, it was built for monkeys. It was originally the Monkey House when the zoo opened. Can you imagine that sight? I have to agree that a new Reptile House would be nice, but the one we have now works, with some exceptions, okay for right now. Seeing as Dragons! is right next door, I was hoping that the Nocturnal House might become a new reptile exhibit complex, but unfortunately, that will not happen.

The zoo also added four other videos to Youtube recently:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tUlG4bi-Wc&feature=relmfu
Video on the zoo's "painting" Red Pandas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uKu0y83Rvco&feature=relmfu
Video on the zoo's Ring-tailed Lemurs.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6dwaYD4au4E&feature=relmfu
Video on the zoo's Imperial Shags, or Blue-eyed Cormorants.

A new video of the zoo's baby Binturong.

I went to the zoo yesteday. I saw the baby bearcat and it was CUTE!!!! I also saw my cousin, who is volunteering in the children zoo. He told me they are training a dog (which I saw briefly) to be part of the Blakely's Barnyard Bonanza show in the children zoo. I asked him if they still let the animals in the nursery out and he said they do, it just depends on when the animal handlers feel like showing up. So I guess there isn't a schedule posted cuz... well.. there isn't a schedule.

I also went to the CREW public exhibit for the first time. Not sure if anyone else has gone to that, but they had a video screen showing the baby Pallas' cats and they were adorable. It's a pretty interesting demonstration - and educational too. The zoo does a lot of stuff "behind the scenes".

Common Vampire Bat????? There's an uncommon vampire bat???? Wait, I'm not sure I even want to know!!

I guess it's just the luck of the draw with the docent animals :p

It's nice to hear from someone that's actually been to the CREW exhibit. I've never made it back there personally. I usually either run out of time before, or I forget that it's there!

Yes, there are actually three species of Vampire Bats: the Common Vampire Bat (Desmodus rotundus), Hairy-legged Vampire Bat (Diphylla ecaudata), and White-winged Vampire Bat (Diaemus youngi). There are also False Vampire Bats! :)

Cool cougar video - I think that is the first time I have seen one in the water. It will be interesting to see if they still go in the water as they get older, because contrary to what the director said in the video, cougars generally do NOT like water. (My local Arizona Sonora Desert Museum has a large pond in the front of the cougar exhibit and even though the sign says they sometimes go in the water, I have never once seen it in the 18 years I have been going there).

I looked it up and cant find the answer, Why do elephants move back and forth to make it seem like their dancing? Sabu does this every time i visit

That swaying, or dancing as you called it, is a stereotypical behavior that he has developed either during his time here or at the Dickerson Park Zoo. Such swaying is unfortunately common in captive elephants.

the young Galapagos Tortoises.

What i think they should do when they get older is move them to the empty yard in Wildlife Canyon. Wouldnt be very exciting but at least they would be put in a nicer place and at least that something would be that exhibit.

And what kind of species of tigers bred the Hybrid White Tigers?

I wouldn't want to see the exhibit sit empty for that long. The tortoises are still too small, and tortoises grow very slowly. As a result, it will be a while before they are large enough to go out in such a large (relative to the current body size) enclosure. Anyways, I would say that the current Emu yard would be a much more appropriate home for the tortoises than the former Emu yard would be.

All of the white tigers in captivity are descended from a single male Bengal Tiger from India and have since been specifically bred for their color. Since the the white coat is caused by a recessive gene, both parents would have to carry the recessive gene. To insure that the cubs would be white, the tigers were often bred with sibling or parents, which is known as inbreeding. Over the years Amur Tigers have been crossed with the white tigers as well. As a result, white tigers, as well as all other color morphs and generic "Bengal" tigers, in captivity are inbred hybrids that are not genetically valuable and serve no purpose for conservation. Often these tigers are used by zoos as drawcards to bring in visitors. However, the AZA discourages the breeding and housing of such tigers in their recognized zoos. Many AZA zoos that had these tigers still keep them in order to give them a proper home until they pass on, which is what the Cincinnati Zoo is doing.

The tayra and her baby are out

Just realized i had night mode on my phone so i got good pics of NH, nevermind i did but i put my resolution to a make it show up as a small pic, so if your wondering why my pics are so small thats the reason why. No problem can always go on Wednesday. is there anyway you can zoom on a pic and save it on here?

Today was my 2nd last visit to the zoo :( so i wont be updating anymore after Wednesday.

The aardwolf is finally being upgraded

The cougar exhibit is looking so much nicer because of the grass

The duiker signage was taken down... how old is/was it, do you think it couldve died, because Kudu said it was very old?

Thanks for another one of your updates Cinzoo man :)

- I'm glad to hear the the Tayra cub is finally out on exhibit.

-I'll certainly miss your frequent updates! I don't get to the zoo nearly as often as you did, so it was always nice to hear what was going on.

-Unfortunately, the death of the duiker is always a possibility. He could have always just been taken off exhibit again, though I haven't seen him since he "went on exhibit" again anyways.

the worst part is that i wont be able to see the cougars.

Just out of curiosity, do you or anyone else (if they know) mind telling me what was all in todays Aye-aye exhibit, besides the Grey's crowned guenon?

The current bird house was also originally built as a reptile house.

I believe that I remember seeing Patas Monkeys and Rock Hyraxes in that exhibit in the early 2000s. I believe I also remember there being Diana Monkeys there as well. The current Diana Monkey exhibit then held Colobus Monkeys and Aardwolves. I remember there being a mix of DeBrazza's Monkeys and Kirk's Dik-diks somewhere in Jungle Trails, but I don't remember where.

@gerenuk- Sorry, we must have been posting at the same time, but yes, Wings of The World was built as a reptile house in I believe 1937. I believe it was converted into a bird house around 1951 or so. Though I believe that it still held American Alligators for a while after that.

Wow! you know so much, thanks.

And the original bird house was in the area that Gorilla World is in now.

You're welcome :)

Well, it wasn't really a bird house, but rather a series of seven Oriental-style aviaries that were built in 1875. Today only one of these aviaries is still standing: the Passenger Pigeon Memorial. In 1953 the aviaries were converted into monkey enclosures, only for six of them to be torn down in 1977 for the construction of Gorilla World, which opened in 1978.

Did anyone know that there is a Tawny Frogmouth in the building across from the Petting Zoo, her name is Hali. Saw the cruelest thing, they put a pack of newborn mice in some of the snake exhibits.
