Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News From the Cincinnati Zoo 2011 #2

The path was closed off and they had access to both if I remember correctly.

i remember and it wasnt closed off, because i remember walking through it. the fences were just rope to keep them in the enclosure.

I'm certain that the barn was roped off on my visit, though I'm not saying it wasn't when you visited. I do remember seeing macropods of some sort in both paddocks, though. My visit was only a day or so after the exhibit opened. Perhaps things could have changed as the summer went on, as it was a seasonal exhibit. The animals could have still been getting used to their new surroundings at the time of my visit.

didnt someone say that the gorillas wont breed anymore on the last thread? is it because of over population of the exhibit if i am correct?

That's not exactly the reason why. The zoo will not be actively breeding gorillas because their gorillas' genes are already well represented in the population here in the United States.

Well the first link is rather old news at this point :p

I've seen those plans before, and they're quite old. We'll have to see how the zoo's current plans sticks works out compared to this one. As you can see, these plans have the Cheetah Encounter near the CREW building, when in fact it is a part of the African Savannah in their current plans. You also see that these plans call for an expanded Sumatran Rhinoceros complex to allow for more rhinos and more breeding. Obviously these plans were made before the loss of Emi, and the zoo's current plan for the Sumatran Rhinos is uncertain at best.

In other news, the zoo recently held a private event to raise awareness and money for the next phase of their African Savannah project.

At the recently concluded 2011 annual convention of the Feline Conservation Federation, it was decided that the 2012 convention will be held in Cincinnati. Though not officially sponsored by the zoo, it will include a tour of the cat facilities at the zoo.

@Cinzoo man- Though it may be recent news on ZooBorns, that story has been posted several time before within the last month :p

@Arizona Docent- It's nice to hear that the 2012 Feline Conservation Federation convention will be held in Cincinnati next year, as by the time of the convention all of the zoo's cat facilities, besides the white lion enclosure area, will all have been recently renovated and remodeled. Cat Canyon will have just opened, and Night Hunters and the cougar exhibit will have only been open for a year. Not to mention their recent breakthrough work with AI on Pallas' Cats.

Does anyone know what date Tiger Canyon will close, they said it would be this month?

The date has yet to be released, and depending on the circumstances, it could have been moved back. If you remember, the date for the Cat House's closing was only revealed not too long before it was set to close. They won't release a specific date until they have everything in order and know for sure.

I don't mean to sound negative but has anyone noticed Thayne Maynard says false facts in some of his videos, such as: he said okapis were antelopes, he called Sichuan takins Golden-haired takins, he said red river hogs were endangered (least concern), he called bonobos, bonobo chimpanzees (kind of right). He said that no one ever visits Monkey Island, but everyone goes there and you can't miss it. He called a parma wallaby a baby kangaroo. He said siamangs are the loudest mammals in the world, I believe it but from experience, my research says otherwise. In good but old news, I was watching the Ragianna bird-of-paradise video and he said we will plan on breeding them. Again don't mean to sound negative.

Did Manatee Springs open in 1993? Zoolex is down so I can't find out.

Does anyone know what happened to Caspian?

Also the ''Potto'' I saw in the aye-aye exhibit, was twice the size of a full grown potto that Ive seen in NH and pictures but it had the exact same body structure.

Also today is Thayne Maynard's 25th anniversary as the 90-second naturalist

A lot of new videos lately....

Video about the Cat Canyon exhibit, which will be in the place of the current Tiger Canyon exhibit which closes after Labor Day. If all goes as planned, the exhibit will open in May.

Video about the zoo's African Savannah project with new concept art. Recently the zoo received one million dollars from Kroger's and Pepsi Co. to go towards the next phase of the project.

These both look fantastic. I have not been to Cincinnati in a decade, but will definitely need to return once all this is done. (Maybe even next summer, when the annual Feline Conservation Federation convention is being held in Cincinnati).

Thank you so much for posting, I am really excited

So wait is the attraction called Africa? and if you read on the website, when it says Africa will open in 2014, it also said it will open after phase III, and then the hippo exhibit will open, Im confused.

Right now I would say the Cincy zoo is the most active, hardworking, progressed, and overall best zoo in the nation right now!:)

that could be argued... haha.

True, but I just feel so proud of how well they're doing, they have so many zoo babies when its not in season, they have 2 amazing exhibits ready to build for the future, they just built one amazing exhibit for cougars and an okay Night Hunters, they made history using AI twice and two more to come next year (aye-aye and clouded leopards). Lastly They have a pregnant okapi who will give birth around December of next year. what I originally said was also my opinion.

@Arizona Docent- Yes, I agree. I'm very pleased with the concepts shown so far for the Cat Canyon and Africa complexes. With the newly opened Cougar enclosure and then these two larger complexes, it appears that the zoo is heading in the right direction after the very hit-and-miss Night Hunters and Dragons! exhibits. We'll have to see how the projects materialize.

@Cinzoo man- Yes, the official name for the exhibit complex is "Africa", though through the early developmental stages it was referred to as the "African Savannah". As the zoo still needs to raise 4.3 million dollars to complete Phase III of the Africa, they don't expect Phase III to completed until 2014. A $7 million dollar Phase IV, the Nile Hippopotamus exhibit, will follow Phase III.
