Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden News From the Cincinnati Zoo 2011 #2

"Clyde", who somehow seemed to escape me while posting yesterday, is considered to have been the oldest Black Rhinoceros in captivity when he died. "Klyde" is most certainly not the oldest Black Rhinoceros in captivity currently.

However, what you said about how "Klyde" is likely never to see another female is true. He's genetically invaluable, and since the Black Rhinoceros is solitary, there is no reason for him to ever be introduced to a female again. That's why he was moved to the Cincinnati Zoo. Cincinnati decided to no longer actively breed Black Rhinoceroses and focus on breeding their Asian rhinoceros species. Columbus wanted to free up space in the Pachyderm Building to continue breeding Black Rhinoceroses. Since Klyde is genetically invaluable and Cincinnati still had the room to hold a single Black Rhinoceros, he was transferred to Cincinnati in 2009.

When I say the only one in captivity, it will most likely refer to the only one in the U.S. or Western hemisphere
Question about Klyde. Is he the oldest black rhino in captivity? I was reading something about the Columbus zoo and it said he was.
Why do I keep thinking I'm reading posts from another user every time I read one of yours?

There will be the 24th little penguin born at the zoo next year.

Thanks for the clarification everyone.

zoogiraffe: What do you mean?
Just saying that your posting style and your comments, remind me of a user that got banned, apart from the fact that you seem to except that you can be wrong just like the rest of us,which was something they couldn't!

If it's the same user I think you're comparing them to then check out their use of punctuation and spelling, miles apart. But i suppose a quick English lesson isn't totally unthinkable... ;)

Just to let people know, I am not responding because I do not want to get into the fourth time being accused of Cinzoo man. I also settled this it by pm zoogiraffe in which he/she is currently ignoring me. I should just come out and say it. First of all our gender is different, second our age is about 10 or so years apart. So believe what ever you want, it seems I am not welcome here.

Ok guys, lets get back on topic. I understand why you guys would be suspicious considering Moebelle joined the site after Cinzoo man was banned, but like Brum mentioned, the punctuation and spelling are miles apart.

Thanks for the great video Kudu.

I went to the zoo tonight, I know in the rain, and got a billion pictures.

DavidBrown: I got all of your pictures that you requested, yes all of them:)

It appears that the North American River Otter exhibit has been repaired and the otters are back on exhibit. I'm not sure how long ago it was repaired, however. Today was the first day that I've seen any pictures of them on the zoo's flickr stream in quite some time, and the picture is dated December 18th, 2011.

Finally, thanks for looking that up. I forgot to mention the coolest thing at the zoo that I saw. I looked behind the entrance to Night Hunters, and saw it, the major construction of Cat Canyon, it looked amazing, just like a giant canyon that I could not believe I was looking out onto.

I was really hoping for construction updates on the zoo's blog, similar to what they did with Night Hunters, but it doesn't seem like that's going to happen. Perhaps when it's closer to completion.

This is a delightful Christmas present. Thank you Mobelle! I greatly appreciate your efforts.

Also, very sorry to see that you were being harassed about the Cinzoo man thing. You ARE very welcome here and your contributions are greatly appreciated.

I completely forgot to mention, guess who might be pregnant..... Jati!!. I was talking to a worker in the elephant house and he said that they did a sonogram on Jati too early.

A Lady Ross' Turaco hatched a week ago. It will be raised to be a part of the Animal Encounters program.
