The Deep News from The Deep

One of the zebra shark eggs that was laid has since hatched; is was 234mm long and 72g at birth. Although it is a little early to say for sure, they think it is a female.

The Deep has hatched three zebra shark eggs received from Shedd Aquarium. The babies will be raised at The Deep until the European studbook keeper advises on a final destination, which will be determined by matching them with unrelated zebra sharks.

There have been some new invertebrate arrivals throughout April:

- Giant leaf insects and purple jewel beetles both arrived from Bristol Zoo on April 5th
- 18 Atlantic sea nettle jellyfish arrived from Lisbon Oceanarium on 15th April; they are on display in the Cool Seas area

- They have also managed to get larvae from their velvet swimming crabs and are attempting to rear them for the first time

A female zebra shark has recently hatched - according to the Deep's Facebook announcement this is their first baby of this species. I suppose this means that all the previous hatchings have been of eggs laid in other collections.

6 Fried Egg Jellyfish arrive from Vienna Zoo.

"Fried-egg jellyfish?! – It’s no Yolk!
We welcome the arrival of 6 Fried-egg jellyfish from Vienna Zoo which have gone on display in the Cool seas exhibit. The Deep will be the first UK aquarium to attempt to culture this species (not to over-egg it!). It’s easy to see how this particular animal got its name!"

Two male baby zebra sharks have been moved on to new homes as part of the European Breeding Programme - one (by the name of Arran) has gone to Lisbon Oceanarium and the other (called Harrison) to Acquario de Genoa.

The remaining two Zebra Shark juveniles have now been exported to Jerusalem Biblical Zoo

Does anyone know where I can find a complete up to date species list for The Deep

Try contacting them directly (via email I would suggest). Remember what fish they have can vary wildly due to where they can source them from.

Are there any species you are interested in particularly? As I may be able to help.

Thanks for the advice it is mainly the species in Lagoon of light and the shark tank that I am interested in

The Deep have announced today that they have successfully bred the Lake Zacapu garter snake for the first time in a UK collection. Seven hatchlings consisting of three males and four females have hatched.

This species will be going on-show in a new display in 'Deep Blue One' later this month.

The Deep will reopen tomorrow - a lucky escape all round:

Good news!
The Deep will reopen tomorrow, Friday 12 August from 10am -6pm (last entry 5pm). We would like to thank everyone for their lovely messages and support over the last 2 days.

The only tank which was affected was the real coral display. As a result we lost about 6 small tropical fish. We have been able to rescue approximately 85% of the Coral.

The penguins whose exhibit is next to the Coral tank but separated from it by a floor to ceiling wall were evacuated onto their outside balcony. So were away from any smoke and disruption and are all fine

Not sure if this has been mentioned elsewhere, so I will post it here:

From 13th September 2016 to mid-February 2017 the Lagoon of Light exhibit at The Deep (a large generic coral reef tank) will be closed for a £500,000 refurbishment. The rest of The Deep will be open as usual.

The exhibit is being designed by David Lazenby, responsible for exhibits including Eismeer at Hagenbeck Zoo, the Steinhart Aquarium at California Academy of Sciences, Askham Bryan College AMC and The Deep's own Endless Ocean exhibit, and will be based upon the granite island of Palau Ubin, between Singapore and Malaysia. At least £300,000 of the money will be used on new lighting, coral, mangrove trees and real foliage.
