Weltvogelpark Walsrode News from Walsrode 2011 - 2013

Thank you, jwer! But about the Peruvians, are they still in the park? Zootierliste only lists Guinian cock-of-the-rock. However, I'm probably not going behind the scenes, so that doesn't really matter...

Pygathrix: If I could afford going to Edinburgh, I would (that certainly seems to be an interesting city, the zoo and a trip to Bass Rock only being bonuses), but unfortunately that's not the case. :P Couldn't even afford to travel abroad on my own this year, but fortunately my parents invited me along for some days in Lower Saxony. And as for gannets, I've been out to try and see migrating gannets in my own country several times, but no luck... Otherwise, I also prefer to see animals in the wild rather than in a zoo, unless it's next to impossible to see them in the wild.
 
@Pygathrix, that notion is probably true for most if not all bird species. Just it aint realistic (and perhaps for the better so). :cool:
 
Hatchings of both Golden Quetzal and Twelve Wired BOP announced today (source ActuZoo)
 
Walsrode opened last weekend, and it wouldn't be Walsrode without some spectacular species on display. Notes below are from a visitor from the german forum:

- 2 Storms' Storks are now on display, the only ones in Europe.
- A kiwi is on display in the hummingbird house, in the exhibit that was formerly for the yellow-footed honeycreepers. The three hummingbird aviaries are still for the male and female trainbearers and a male emerald hummer.
- A total of 6 different aviaries are now filled with cock-of-the-rocks, with both species on display.

Thanks for this update - just noticed the storks' move on show on Zootierliste this evening. I'm visiting Walsrode on Friday (and Sunday) with some fellow bird nerds so will hopefully be able to bring back some pretty pictures! :D

how big is this enclosure for the kiwi? Going from displaying honeycreepers in it to a kiwi sounds a bit weird.
 
hard to judge the size from the photo, but looks reasonable (or at least not tiny). Pity about the huge tree taking up most of the floor space though.

Anyone know where in the park are kept Storm's storks (Ciconia stormi)? This is a larger aviary or enclosure or maybe Freiflughalle? From what I heard last year while in Walsrode that the park has also Lesser Adjutans (Leptoptilos javanicus). Whether they are still kept out of the exposure? It is good that Walsrode rebuilding their once famous collection of a variety of storks from the world.
As last year in Walsrode I remember that on one enclosure (near the sea ducks and aviary for birds of prey) was a design for a new aviary. Does anyone know what is there now?

@Tomek the Storm's storks should be in an aviary in the Tropenhalle

I don't know anything about lesser adjudants at Walsrode, zootierliste doesn't list them and if they would be present they are off-show.
 
A few updates from Walsrode today:

About a quarter of the birds are being kept in due to cold, including almost everything in the Pheasantry and free-flight aviary, but most stuff is on show as normal.

Storm's Storks are on show in an aviary in the Rainforest Hall.

We didn't see a kiwi; the aviary has been boxed-in and is viewed through popholes.

We spotted one species missing from Zootierliste, Black-tailed Gull.

Up-date about the Golden-headed Quetzal breeding at Walsrode :
Sept. 4 2012 first chick hatched - European first breeding
Oct. 21 and Oct. 23 2012 second and third chicks hatched
End of January 2013 fourth chich hatched
End of February 2013 fifth chick hatched
All 5 chicks have been succesfully handraised.
 
I would like to go to walsrode in the next couple of weeks but are there bird fans who have been already to walsrode this year? I'd like to know if there are some species on display:

Courol, Montezuma oropendola, black-faced spoonbill, and I know they have swallow tanager and great cuckoo-dove, anybody knows in which hall they are?
 
@Rupicola, at the end of may only the swallow tanagers could have been on display, the others were definitely not, although I can't recall having seen a swallow tanager, but they could well have been displayed in the paradieshalle.
 
two questions that I hope someone that has visitied within the last 6 months or so can answer:

1) The cloven-feathered dove is still in the Paradies Halle, right?
2) Of their bird-of-paradise, I guess there hasn't been any change: twelve-wired on display, while king, red and Raggiana are not on display?
