Weltvogelpark Walsrode news from Walsrode 2014

@ Merintina : I visited Zoo Veldhoven ( the formerly Papegaaienpark NOP ) last week and the only Cotingas kept are the pair of Bare-necked fruitcrows.

Thank you for the info Vogelcommando! Is a pity, they had a really nice collection of cotingas...

Those Horned Screamers are a great new! Hope they´ll keep some at public view.

New species at Walsode : Brown tinamous Crypturellus obsoletus. These are the only ones on public displaqy in Europe :)

Are tinamous kept privately in Europe? Is that where these birds originated from, or were they imported?

They are in private hands to some degree, so I assume this is where these animals derive from.

It seems to me that this species came from the Belgian Cracid Breeding and Conservation Center (CBCC) in Zutendaal. They have a large collection of different species of Cracids, Cranes and Tinamous. Current director of the park in Walsrode is the founder of this Belgian facility.

2 Celebes hornbills have left the nest :)

= Sulawesi knobbed hornbill, Aceros cassidix.
There are two hornbills on Sulawesi (formerly Celebes) and the name "Celebes hornbill" has been used for both: Sulawesi knobbed and Sulawesi tarictic. Walsrode has both species.

Two Lesser Adjutant Storks are currently on display.

The park also organizes 1-hour behind the scenes tours, paid extra. They take you only to one of several chosen popular birds (owls etc) not to off-show specialities like birds of paradise or hummingbirds.
