and the Dark chanting goshawk (Melierax metabates).

A species which will be a lifetick for me whenever it does eventually go onshow :) although not the main offshow species I'd want to see go onshow!

Aw no, that's such a shame. Do you know of anywhere else that keeps Cuckoo Rollers?

As far as I know even Madagascar doesn't have any captive holdings of the species - so Walsrode was a true "last chance to see" opportunity.

Hi my friends,
when looking at zootierliste, I noticed that Red bird-of-paradise (not signed)currently occupies the row of aviaries, where the other species of bird-of-paradise are kept. Can anyone who visited recently confirm this ?
Thanks, Jakub
Yes, two females (or at least young birds) are on show right now, but as you said, not signed.

Just came home from the park. These species are new on show:
- Blue-headed quail-dove (Starnoenas cyanocephala)
- Pin-tailed sandgrouse (Pterocles alchata caudatus)
- Northern rosella (Platycercus venustus)
- White-winged duck (Asarcornis scutulata)
- Radjah shelduck (Radjah radjah)
- Giant wood rail (Aramides ypecaha)
- Northern lapwing (Vanellus vanellus)

Also, the marail guans seem to be on show again as they are now signed in the freiflughalle. I did not see them though!

Where in the park are they kept?
They are kept in the Mediterranean area, near the entrance and Reich der Mitte. After Reich der Mitte, follow the path past the Hawaiian geese down to the Waldrapp aviary. Then, turn right and find them in the first aviary there, where they are housed with rosy starlings, next to the Maghreb magpie. They were not signed during my latest visit.

Visitors from last year or the year before might recall this aviary as the former home of the great roadrunner.

Visited yesterday, cold and wet and spent most time around Fasanerie, Paradies Halle, and Pukara.

Failed to see any Pitta's, nor Cock of the Rock's which stayed in their houses out of view, but saw Red Bird of Paradise (still signed as Raggiana I think) and a pair of Twelve Wired Bird of Paradise along Fasanerie.

Other highlights were the Harpy Eagle, the two Hummers in Pukara, Macaws, Andean Condor pair, plus some beautiful coloured passerines like Turquiose Tanager, Swallow Tanager, Red-legged Honeycreepers, and Spangled Cotinga. Egyptian Plover was nice as were Blue Coua's, various Rollers, Trogans, Hornbills, Macaws.

Needed more time. Gutted not to see Cock of the Rocks nor any Pitta's but pleased to see the Birds of Paradise which were my main target.

Thanks. Guess I'll have to go for another visit soon then. Sandgrouse, Hypocolius and Black-spotted Barbet would all be new families (+Dunnock would be new as a captive family).
Saw the three main targets but was too dumb to find the dunnocks.

Mousebirds are listed as bts on zootierliste but they were on show in the East Africa aviary yesterday.
Kiwi was very active. BoPs were a bit shy as usual but saw all four species signed. Cock-of-the-rocks and wood hoopoe were no-shows. Lot's of Aussie parrots and cockatoos. Didn't see King Vulture or Giant Wood Rail. Blue-headed Quail-dove was a nice new bird though unexpected in the parrot house.

Does anyone know if the Walsrode Welt Vogel Park 'Park Guide' is produced in English?

I do understand that it is probably not worth their effort, but I bought the one in German and would love to read it as it looks a fantastic publication crammed with useful information.

None of the guidebooks published by Walsrode (41 editions plus a few variants) have been in English.

Hi Najade
I was there on Friday and saw Twelve-Wired and Red Bird of Paradise along Fasanerie. I presume the other BOP were Raggiana and King BOP?

I spent a long time in Paradies-Halle, in Pukara, and along Fasanerie, also walked past all the parrot enclosures on the way to Pukara from Fasanerie.

Where were the following please?: -

Dark Chanting Goshawk
Grey Hypocolius
King Bird of Paradise
Raggiana Bird of Paradise
