Weltvogelpark Walsrode news from Walsrode 2025

Not much news from yesterday’s visit, but two new species were spotted: ruddy quail-dove (Geotrygon montana martinica) and northern shoveler (Spatula clypeata) - both unsigned. The racket-tailed treepie (Crypsirina temia) is now back on show.

No major updates in the European area, except that some smaller bushes/trees have been planted, and it looks like work on the path has begun.

We already knew that the pompadour cotinga and white-winged trumpeter had died, but I also heard yesterday that the piapiac, rufous treepie, and Siberian rubythroat are no longer kept either.

I also forgot to mention last time that the crimson topaz (Topaza pella pella) is no longer on show. The aviary is now empty and the signage has been removed. The same now applies to the Indian cotton pygmy-goose (Nettapus coromandelianus coromandelianus).

Walsrode has received a pair of rare Great Barbets (Psilopogon virens). They’re probably not on show yet, but as always, I’ll keep everyone updated. Fun fact: I just got back from Czechia, where I went to see this species at Zoo Zlín-Lešná! Well, maybe I can at least get better photos now "at home"...

Thank you very much.
Nice to see that Reich der Mitte gets more species. (I wish they add Collared Grosbeaks [or any other grosbeak species] and replace Red-whiskered Bulbuls and White-crested Laughingthrushes with a rarer laughingthrush/bulbul species).

According to ZTL you can find the Scaled Quail and the Great Barbet in the Fasanerie (the quail together with Horned Guan, Western Bluebird, Nothern Cardinal and Socorro Dove; the barbet with Mikado Pheasant) and the Bufflehead in the seabird aviary. Other information I couldn’t find.
