Weltvogelpark Walsrode news from Walsrode 2025

Fortunately, the last Papuan Mountain Pigeon (Gymnophaps albertisii), a single male, is still alive, though it’s still not on show. (Source: ZTL)

A zookeeper told me that the old individual was killed by a pair of snowy-crowned robin-chats (or was it white-crowned?), so I would assume this is a new individual in that case.

Alternatively, it could just be outdated information taken from ZIMS (I don’t think it was ever removed from there). I’ve also heard that there are some other “errors” in ZIMS, for example it still lists two giant couas, even though they only have one now.

Just updated ZTL.
Good to know, that there're some "errors" in ZIMS, as I was already suspicious about whether some entries for the Wilhelma were correct.

I actually found the “source” now, and as I suspected, the person saw the holding on ZIMS and assumed the species was still kept in the park. But I’m certain it was never removed from ZIMS after the old bird died.

@Daniel Sörensen I have two questions (sorry if I annoy you; if it’s so just say it)
1. On ZTL is the information that the Eurasian Song Thrush kept in two aviaries, one of them is called Waldvogelvoliere (in English forest bird aviary). Which aviary is the Waldvogelvoliere and what other species are housed in this aviary?
2. What birds are currently housed in the European corner? According to the Zoofreunde Forum they combined the five aviaries to four aviaries, but most of the birds, that were housed there last year, are this year still on show according to the ZTL.
Thank you very much for your efforts in advance.

You’re not annoying me :) Don’t worry!
1. This is interesting, and I’m afraid I don’t have an answer to what the “Waldvogelvoliere” would be o_O. I’ve never heard anyone mention an aviary with that name in the park, and thinking about it I can only imagine it must be the aviary row in the European corner… I’ve only ever seen the thrushes in the 4th aviary in this row, nowhere else (but that doesn’t mean much, I could have missed them!). Perhaps this could be something very new as well?
2. Not exactly sure what they mean. This row of aviaries still has 5 aviaries and houses more or less the same species as last year (at least during my latest visit). The little owl moved though, and in that aviary is now the red-footed falcon, and the Persian pheasant is kept in one of these aviaries now as well.

In the European corner in the aviary on the right side next to the signed Caucasian pheasant (Phasianus colchicus colchicus) was another unsigned pheasant. Did u know which species or which pheasant it is or which pheasants are kept in the European corner? My visit was on 15th august

That is the rare Persian pheasant (Phasianus colchicus persicus). The other two species of pheasants kept in the European area are Phasianus colchicus colchicus and Phasianus colchicus bianchii.

According to ZTL the Italian Partridges aren't in the collection anymore.
A true shame given the conservation status of this subspecies, they seem to have been very short-lived, and it would be good to know where they originated from given there's roughly 3 breeding centres for this taxon in northern Italy.
Perhaps surplus?

Where can I find the Iberian Partridge and the oriental turtle dove and with which other species are they kept?
The Iberian Partridge should be kept in the Iberian aviary with Iberian Magpie, Spottless Starling and Rock Pigeon.
The Oriental Turtle Dove should be kept in the Fasanerie, but I don't with which species.

I noticed one new species during today’s visit, a group of Sudan golden sparrows (Passer luteus) in the Paradieshalle. However, it seems that between my visits, Dybowski's twinspot (Euschistospiza dybowskii) was briefly put on display, only to be gone again a few days later. The park no longer keeps this species.

Some other news/info:
- The crowned hornbill (Lophoceros alboterminatus) is not on show yet. It’s uncertain whether it will be placed in the free-flight area of the Paradieshalle, as it was hand-raised and is too social with people.
- Walsrode no longer keeps the Amazilia hummingbird (Amazilis amazilia).

There‘re Goliath Herons (Ardea goliath) behind the scenes now. Possibly offspring from Dvur Kralove, where this species was breed this year for the first time.
Correct, back in August I was told that they had received 0.1 from Dvůr.
