Bioparc Zoo de Doué la Fontaine News from Zoo de Doue

Was last sunday in Doué. Not a lot to say but the aardvarks are now in their new enclosure and have already dig in it :D Of course, I didn't see any animals !
A net has been put under the enclosure so I expect some birds to come in. According to keepers some new colorfull bird species will arrive in the dry african aviary soon.

Giant otter Arirahna from left today for Iberá National Park in Argentina. She will be paired with the male Nanay who previously came to Argentina from Parken Zoo in Sweden. If all goes well they will be released into the wild in the future.

Thank you very much:)
Do all of these live together in nature? (Are they native in Ituri Rainforest?

Several new bird species will live in the African aviary this season, apart from the earlier announced emerald-spotted wood doves (Turtur chalcospilos) :
- European bee eaters (Merops apiaster)
- Violet-backed starling (Cinnyricinclus leucogaster)
- Bearded barbet (Lybius dubius)

The aardvark are replaced in their former enclosure by Cape porcupines (Hystrix africaeaustralis), now the former have been moved to their 600 square metre new home.

Wait @lintworm how do you find a french article about news from Doué before me as I have a look every day to new press articles on french zoos to give to my foreigner friends ;)
Thank you for sharing. To complete : other bird species are coming in the next months if all goes well.

There was a single remaining before the closure last year so not surprising they have no longer the species.

Damm, that’s a real shame. First Berlin, now Doué. The species really seems to not have any luck in spreading through Europe.

Some recent news from my visit last february 11th :
- okapis were in mating time so fingers crossed there will be a healthy calf this year,
- new arrival in the okapis sanctuary with lemon doves (3 or more) Columba larvata. This species is a rarity in european zoo (4 holders according to Zootierliste) but breed well in private facilities.
- 3 or 4 eastern brown pelicans arrived from Tierpark Berlin and are off-show at the moment.
- the only king vulture left. The zoo does not know if new animals will be bring.
- the male Cape porcupine arrived just before my visit so there is now a breeding pair. He was in the indoor pen while the female was outdoor but a no show.
- the aardvarks were a no show too but according to the keepers they enjoy their new enclosure with plenty of earth to dig.
- the african dry aviary is empty of birds as the zoo wants to release all the birds in order to allow them to fit weel and find their space. The european bee eaters have not arrived yet but the others are there in the warm house.
- the new giant river otters pair is doing well and the animals look really in love.
- the pygmy hippo calf is visible but depending of the weather and her mom.
- to finish there are new special viewing windows on lions enclosure from the african dry aviary. Let's see how it is !

Of course it's not glass but a reinforced mesh where the animals can smell you and the contrary. The time was impressive as the lions were so closed and the male is really strong. Amazing !

ps : The child on the picture is not my daughter at all but was there with her parents and enjoyed the meeting !

A little late but here a video of the moving to the new enclosure of the 3 Aardvarks :

Yes ! I was aware of the future birth for months but, with regard to the previous problem, everyone was afraid that the gestation would not go through or that the baby would be viable. So the Zoo decided to not communicate on the pregnancy.
