Bristol Zoo Project Next Steps?

Does any one know what will be next for Wild Place, and any new species that are planned for next year?

I'm going to Bristol later and will visit the zoo. Is this place worth visiting? Not much action on Zoochat regarding it. Could I get in on my Chester membership?

Probably because so far they have only a small collection- Okapi, Eland, Zebra, R.R.Hog, Wolves, Lemurs & some 'petting' animals. Its reflected in the reduced price compared to e.g. the main Zoo. It is literally just off the M5 though, so probably worth dropping in if you have time.

I will be interested to see how the arrival of Elephants at Noah's Ark affects WP. For family outings I imagine that Noah's Ark with its increasingly high range of ABC's would be the first choice at present, though closed on Sundays of course.

No you cannot use your Chester membership card to get in,even Bristol members I believe do not get in free!

That said I like the place alot not many species but done very well!

Perhaps, it is of some good to Wild Place and the expansion of its collection and masterplan if one supports the Society and their new outlier zoo by paying the usual entry fee?

Quote from the following article in the link below ;)

"That’s one of the positive things about having a second site. We want to make them very different, and for the Wild Place Project we do have the space and we are hoping to bring in some very big animals over the next few years. We have plans to bring in giraffes in 2016, which will be really exciting.”

Made a first visit yesterday and was impressed with the progress so far, the site has massive potential and should be fairly major zoo within 5-10 years.
A cheetah enclosure is under construction, due to open 'spring' 2015, but I suspect it is a few months of completion

Excellent :D becoming a bit of a UK speciality.....

Do you just say the first thing that comes into your mind, lowlandanoa? :p

Try to aim for quality of posting rather than quantity of posting; you obviously mean well but bombarding every thread going with inane comments will dilute anything solid you have to contribute to the point no one will pay attention when you *do* have something to contribute!

A press release issued today confirms that Wild Place will be joining Chester, Whipsnade and Marwell in housing Northern Cheetahs (acinonyx jubatus sommeringii)
Cheetah - coming Spring 2015 | The Wild Place Project

This is good news, of course - but the press release is embarrassingly poorly written! I am surprised that an organisation such as the Bristol Zoological Society cannot do better.

And have I missed something, but since when has Acinonyx jubatus sommeringii been called the "Central African Cheetah" as it is here?

Yes, you've missed something :)
'Central African Cheetah' is one of the names used for soemmeringii - and probably a better name than 'Northern Cheetah' since the real Northern form is hecki [Saharan Cheetah].

Thanks Mike. I feel all Clinton Keeling about a change in name!
