Hi,

I'm a new-ish member here. I'm about to graduate with a Masters in Ecology and Conservation Biology, I have some but limited experience working in relevant fields and I like the idea of sharing scientific knowledge with the general public.

I've been reading a fair number of posts on this site for a while and thought that I might like to get involved in some of the discussions that go on. A lot of them are very interesting, there are a lot of different opinions aired and very relevant topics brought up. There is also a lot of knowledge shared here so maybe this is a good place to ask; how do you break into zoo work?! Right now, it seems impossible, everyone wants to work at a zoo. How do I work towards becoming, for example, a conservation director at a zoo?

Good to have someone from Sweden, which I believe has the best standard of zoos in the world. As for jobs, I know the AZA here in the states has job listings on their website. Perhaps the EAZA has the same thing to help you find a job in Europe?
 
Welcome to the group! The trouble with finding a career, just as you have sadly discovered, is there is fierce competition from many, for what is so few jobs in said industry. Thats why I had chose a career a lil more easy to find work in, and then persue my loves and interests as hobbies and similar. Far easier for me to get a job, for example, as a machinist or welder, than it is to compete with the tens of thousands all wanting the very same job at a zoo. Same thing happened with the computer industries....too many people, not enough jobs and there is a huge over saturation of people to jobs available. You may consider some animal husbandry positions in given species at exotics animal preserves, or game ranches as such. That may help a little.
