Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Noah's Ark News 2013

I went to Noah's Ark today and a giraffe was born on Sunday 17th July. There is a hold up on the elephant sanctuary whilst they try and fund a million pounds.

Aren't their giraffe different subspecies? I know there was question over this! Their zebra are certainly different subspecies! Not sure they should be breeding purely for the public benefit!!!

They seem to operate outside of conventional Zoo guidelines- to this place a Giraffe is just a Giraffe I think.

The male Giraffe is (I think) a hybrid.
The female is a pure Reticulata, obtained from Dvur Kralov which operates outside EEP guidelines I believe.

Perversely, if one could convince the owners of the error of their ways it may yet become a pure-bred reticulated breeding group. However, given the feet firmly ensconced in the sands attitude with the ownership that ultimately led to their being outside BIAZA that remains a slim possibility.

The offer has already been made and turned down, just like it was with the zebras!

Stupidity, bliss and ignorance probably married into one. The very reason NOAH's will never gain recognition in serious zoo circles. Sad ...

Yes I find this attitude very strange, particularly as other zoos in the U.K. are making the effort to produce pure bred giraffes,:(

Where are they sourcing elephants? A new video says that 'Elephant Eden' is opening in June?

From what I have just read, Elephant Eden is to open in June, initially with two or three African elephants sourced from a U.K. collection, with the eventual aim to have six cows, one bull and hopefully babies

I would be interested to know which UK zoo - and surely there are not that many with African elephant cows - will loan out individuals to NOAH's. Really am ...:)

There are only seven UK zoos with African Elephants, so if the 'UK' information is correct there is a pretty limited pool of options.

The seven are:

Howletts
Port Lympne
West Mids
Colchester
Knowsley
Paignton
Blair Drummond

And quite a number of those are pretty low on numbers currently (West Mids and Port Lympne certainly are, and I think Blair Drummond as well - Howletts have had losses recently too - and Paignton of course only the one, very elderly individual with eyesight problems that I cannot imagine them wanting to move at this stage). Unless any of these are going out of African Elephants it's hard to see where these are coming from.

EDIT: And that's without considering whether any of these zoos would be prepared to send eles to Noah's in the first place...

EDIT 2: This also of course represents the abandonment of the 'rescue' angle!

Or the keeping of a breeding group of 1.3 Asians, also mooted at one stage(I think I read that on the noticeboards on their site.)

I think the phrase 'whatever elephants they can get' is the one that springs to mind...
