Jola, if you have any Information about the situation of Shaka in Vienna please share- I thought he was incompartible with the females and introductions failed. Is that correct?

Regarding the Colchester females, none of them are able to breed anymore. They should move Tembo asap because he did breed naturally with one or two females and adult males are desperately needed within the african elephant breeding program!! The lack of breeding bulls is the biggest problem in the US and Europe alike.

Why are the Colchester Cows not able to breed anymore?

The last pregnancy in any of them was nearly 10 years ago. If female Elephants don't breed regularly then they stop ovulating and they're reproductive systems eventually shut down. The same can happen with Rhino's. Even the calves they did have were conceived through AI, not naturally.

To my knowledge Tembo arrived after being rescued from Mary Chipperfield Circus in 1998 and has sired 8 calves in total;

4 stillborn (2003,2005,2008,2011) & 4 successful births
Abu- born 2001 at Vienna Zoo through AI, now at Halle Zoo
Kito- born 2002 at Colchester through AI, died 2017, Dvur Zoo
Jambo- born 2004 at Colchester through AI, now at Bioparc Valencia
Thebo- born 2006 at Dresden Zoo through AI, now at Pittsburgh Zoo

Not entirely sure if the calves who were stillbirths we’re through AI but I would presume they were.

Is it a problem that they were conceived through AI? And is this a common way of African Elephants breeding in zoos?
k

I'm assuming the "big news" will be the new arrival we've been discussing? Thanks.

They announced Shaka's arrival today, but they only posted a video taken at Zoo Vienna. Frankly, I'm pretty worried how Shaka is doing and how much battered he looks now, since not a single picture was released. He left Vienna on Wednesday morning, the crate was uploaded from the truck on Saturday at NAZ, poor boy!

Yes, introduction failed, e.g. Tonga got a huge graze wound on half of her back on one side. And, there were rumors that the quality of his sperm was pretty poor. I think Shaka was not very happy at Vienna, I've seen him webbing not only when he in the outdoor enclosure was first time out. He doesn't like rain very much, wants to get into the house when it's raining. He loves playing with tires, throwing things around and climbing onto rocks.

There's a photo of him now on their FB page, drinking in the pool at the Noah's Ark enclosure. He looks okay from what I can see....
