Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Noah's Ark Zoo Farm 2024

Nice to see that they are building a genuine bachelor group (what Elephant Eden was initially built for) as it always felt a little wasted on just two bulls. I assume that Sutton has been introduced to the main group, and that the second enclosure, that was sectioned off while he was introduced to the group, is now used for Uli to settle in, although someone who has visited recently may be able to confirm?

Official confirmation on socials just released

MEET ULI

Last Wednesday we welcomed a HUGE arrival... Uli, the 13 year old African Elephant!

Uli has joined us all the way from Zoo Magdeburg, Germany. Having spent over 5 years in his previous home, Uli’s arrival at Noah’s Ark marks a key chapter in his development as a bachelor male. This will prepare him to eventually move into a breeding group, benefitting the European endangered species programme (EPP) for African elephants.

He becomes the fourth male elephant at the Noah's Ark, joining 32-year-old Shaka, 18-year-old Janu, and 9-year-old Sutton.

A huge thank you to Crossborder Animal Services for all of their amazing efforts to ensure Uli had a safe arrival at Noah's Ark using their brand new, state of the art, Elephant transporter.

Uli will spend the next few weeks settling into his new surroundings, keep your eyes peeled in Elephant Eden on your visit to the Zoo this Easter!

Bit odd in my opinion why this zoo is keeping 4 male elephants. Should really export them to breed, especially the young ones

The purpose of Elephant Eden is to serve as a male bachelor group. The young ones will mature in the company of older, more experienced bulls (not too knowledgable on the matter, but this is supposed to help develop social skills) and then be exported for breeding as you say. At the moment, Sutton and Uli are too young to breed, and Janu is only just approaching that age. For me, it works fine as it is, and with how scarce bachelor groups are in zoos, I have to commend Noah’s Ark for devoting so much space to one.

Well said @Kalaw. Noah's Ark are doing a huge service to the African elephant breeding programme with their current setup. As juvenile males in the wild they would(I believe) leave their family behind and form bachelor herds so they're only replicating natural behaviours

On March 6th, the zoo announced that 30 domestic sheep (breed(s) not specified) were born which are on display in the Farm Barn.

Spent the morning at Noah's Ark (my first visit to the collection).

Not much to note as far as I'm aware, presumably they acquired the white-headed vulture mentioned upthread as there is one on display alongside several grey crowned crane. There's also a giant anteater present in the South America section; I'm unsure of how old that news is but viewing into his indoor housing is currently blocked off, with a sign stating he recently moved and therefore is settling in.

Elephant Eden is thoroughly impressive. Shaka spent all morning in the far field with the long grass, with the other three bulls in the nearside paddock. The scale of the exhibit is fantastic and even at a distance of 100m of so Shaka is an incredibly impressive animal. It's amazing how different the three are from one another, and hopefully not too far down the line they will be starting their own lineages around Europe.

Does anyone know if the hybrid giraffe at noah's ark is male or female?

Male. Kito was born at Dudley zoo in 2014(ish) to a Rothschild bull and hybrid female.
I believe they now have a female from South Lakes so Kordorfan apparently and a Rothschild bull from Belfast

Does anyone remember Kito's last calf born in 2019, Gilbert? Can't find any record of him. George(2012) & Gus(2017) were fathered by the last bull but have both since died.

And so, oblivious to true giraffe genetics is a policy that remains unabated at NAZF. It just don't make no sense and the EEP/EAZA should not continue to provide individuals for them in order to produce another set of hybrids or crossbreeds .... that do not correspond to the new genetics and 4 species with correspondent subspecies (Kordofan and Rothschildt's are definitely different subspecies of the northern giraffe Giraffa camelopardalis with Kordofan (ssp. antiquorum), Nubian ska Rothschildt's (nominale ssp. camelopardalis) and Western (ssp. peralta). That NAZF continues on this dead end alley is both mind boggling and infuriating.

Making my first visit soon, what should I expect, or look out for?
Elephant Eden is amazing, As much as its not the best enclosure, the giraffes are great as there all different species so they all have such different patterns, The andean bear enclosure is amazing plus the owlery is great (A bit hidden away) and becoming rarer in zoos so yea enjoy your visit

VISIT REVIEW
Collection: Noah's Ark Zoo Farm
Date of visit: Monday 12 August 2024
Target Species: Brahminy Kite, Spix's Guan, South Asian Box Turtle.

I arrived at the zoo at about 11:15 today, And Headed Straight to the Reptile House in Search of My first target Species: South Asian Box Turtle. When I reached their exhibit, they were surprisingly active and were pleasantly mixed with tokay gecko who managed to evade me until my third visit around the house. All other species were seen in the reptile house. In the surrounding area was siamangs, Cape porcupines, meerkats, weavers, a gift shop, a walkthrough waterfowl aviary, wallabies and Emus. I walked past the parrot aviary, nothing really special in there. I then made my past the tortoise and lemurs into wings of wonder for my next target Species: Brahminy kites. Just about saw them behind the shelter. I saw the spix's Guan in their aviary, My Dad was quite impressed by the Stellers Sea Eagles, south America section and Elephant Eden Which Is 20 Acres in size!! Apart from that there is not much else that I have to say!

Overall Rating 8.9/10
Will definitely be coming back here when I get the chance.
