Noah's Ark Zoo Farm Noah's Ark Zoo Farm

I was intending to address The Hedgehog, but I guess that didn’t work. It wasn’t aimed at you. I would agree it’s currently under utilised, but it’s there for the next couple of adolescent bulls from Howletts. I remember the last Forest Elephant in the UK was killed for lack of somewhere with facilities to take him...... I’d hate that to happen again

When did the culling of this forest elephant happen ? and in which zoo was it kept ?

Yes, it seems two more from Howletts will likely go there. Maybe one or two others from Europe too in time. Its certainly big enough to take a few more...

I know nothing about elephants, but would agree with Pertinax and FBBird. Such animals must mentally mature in a social situation, and the facility however it was conceived is performing a crucial function, equally as important to a breeding unit. It would follow too, that now it is being used as such, the chances of it being turned over to a breeding facility are pretty low.

I'm sure it will continue in its present state. Noah's Ark wanted elephants but other forces dictated what they ended up housing. Important function too.

Are there no African forest elephants left in Europe? And why aren't they're more breeding programs for this specie?
Zootierliste shows none currently in Europe. Bush Elephants were always more accessible and therefore more often kept. Any breeding programme for them would impact on the amount of space available for the other two species. Elephants take up a lot of resources to keep.

A breeding program for African forest elephants - a separate elephant species - would actually make a lot of sense given the more precarious conservation situation with these.

The thread is going off topic, is it not?

Yes, but where are we going to PUT them?

ZTL said that Paris Vincennes had a male forest elephant until 2002. It seems that the other zoos kept the forest elephant before it was classified as a separate species.

Hi, I've applied for the apprenticeship at Noah's Ark. Could anyone advise me what questions I'll be asked at interview, please?

You'll get better answers on Facebook groups such as ZooKeepers Europe. Just be polite, and I'm sure people will be happy to help. Good luck!!
