Twycross Zoo Noorjahan has a baby boy!

Thats so wonderful! It seems like just yesterday that the whole A.I process was happening at the zoo! (I was there that day!) Congratulations Norja and all at Twycross! How are Tara, Tonzi and Minbu taking to the new arrival? Let us know when you have a name for him!!

maybe having a male calf will make them consider buidling bull facilities in the future, but well done to them!

Finally the little one is here :D

I can see him leaving earlier than other bull calves in other zoos.

So the pundits who forecast it would be a male because of the AI seem to be right.(Maybe Twycross knew its sex anyway from the scans.)

Even though I'd much rather they had a bull, it is still really good to see Noorjahan with her calf, she looks a very competent mother- maybe having experience in the past with Tonzi' & Mimbu's calves helped prepare her. He was born at a good time for them with several weeks of Summer Holidays ahead.

Unfortunately they'll probably send him off to another zoo when he comes of age, but you never know!

Twycross have no plans to keep a mature bull,so he will leave the zoo long before he becomes mature, also from what i have been told they will not have space to build a bull pen and house because of future development plans in that area.

I very much hope Twycross are also working on getting their other females elephants who are capable of breeding pregnant .

If there going to do that I would very much like to see them moved temporary to a zoo with a breeding bull, like they did with the two older cows.

With the high percentage of males born through A.I. they would be shooting themselves in the foot trying A.I. again

Maybe Woburn?, which is not to far as I recall.
What is happenering with the elephants at Woburn, there should be some signs of breeding by now?

Either that or Chester.

Havn't heard much about there elephant herd.

I was at Twycross yesterday, the calf is doing fine and has even ventured outside once. They aren't currently doing the elephant training/feeding as the keepers are concentrating on looking after the mum and calf. The house will be closed for sometime by the sound of it.

This lack of breeding has been discussed many times at great length on the Forum.:(

I believe one of the older females is already considered 'non-reproductive' and I don't know of any plans to breed from the other two. Because they will not/cannot keep a male they have rowed themselves intoa very awkward situation regarding further breeding. Nor can I see them being prepared to send any of the others away to another herd- unless something like unruly behaviour as in the case of Karishma, caused them to do so.

It would be a good step if they sent the two breeding females to another UK zoo that could use them in a breeding program and maybe send any older females to Twycross to make up the numbers
