Akenji at Woodland Park Zoo gave birth to a baby boy on June 28th! :)

The 7-week-old baby boy is going to be moved to another zoo as attempts to reintroduce the baby to his mother or to any of Woodland Park Zoo's other female gorillas as surrogate mothers have not gone so well, so the staff have made the hard decision to move him to another undisclosed zoo so he can be properly raised by gorillas.

The infant, now named "Abeo", has been transferred to Louisville Zoo to be foster reared by 40-year old Kweli who has previously been a foster mom to Kindi in 2016.

News reporting that whistleblowers from Busch Gardens suspect Jim and Tinga died from shigella: Busch Gardens mourning loss of 37-year-old gorilla

Previous posts on this thread said that Jim and Tinga transferred from Jacksonville to Busch Gardens earlier this year, and that Merah was transferred from Jax to BG in ~June.

Jax's press conference was over a week ago and the last shigella update online was August 26th. I can't find any info from BG about shigella.

Does anyone know how the great ape groups at Jax or BG are doing now? Have there been any other apes lost to shigella?

Everyone is doing better I will be at Busch gardens this week Everyone at Jacksonville are doing well too from what I hear

Sadly, this could be no further than the truth. At least, in Jacksonville, it appears that the shigella outbreak is still spreading across our gorillas; for the zoo just announced that three-year old (1.0) Kevin passed away from the illness.
Oh this is just awful for them! Four primates have died in under a month (and two that left the zoo earlier this year) from this same infection! Absolutely praying the rest of their gorillas are fine and that this Shigella outbreak doesn't turn into something like EEHV with elephants. :(

I agree, it’s truly an unfortunate situation over there. I suspected things were starting to get better again on my latest visit; but after learning about Kevin’s passing, it appears now that the zoo’s care team still have a long way to go.

According to the Louisville Zoo and illustrated in beautiful photographs, Abeo has been embraced enthusiastically by his new mother Kweli and is also his new sister Kindi. They went on view for the first time a couple of days ago.
