@Kifaru Bwana welcome to U.S. breeding elephants. It's a cluster****
At the end of the day its the current holders that will suffer in the long run when numbers drop to a point of no return, all will lose long term. I believe all current owners should meet to form a go to plan before things slip beyond there control.

Does anyone know if there is breeding done at the Fresno Zoo? All of the elephants there are at prime breeding age.

Musi has a breeding recommendation with both Nolwazi and Amahle, but I'm not sure if he has been sucessful in breeding the girls. He had a lot of socialization with different bulls growing up in SDZSP including adult bulls Mabu and Msholo so I'm sure he will become a proven breeder soon enough. The girls arrived in October 2018 and with quarantine and intros, they were probably fully introduced to Musi by spring 2019 and it probably took him a while to get the hang of breeding so I would expect and hope for a baby (or two!) sometime in 2022.

That would be great news especially if Musi’s sire is/was wild. Thanks for letting me know.

Great news out of Somerset this morning, Sukiri has delivered a healthy baby girl! Amazing news considering Sukiri is a 28-year-old first-time mother. The calf was born on July 18. Father is Jackson, the birth is a result of natural breeding.

It's A Girl: African Baby Elephant Born At Pittsburgh Zoo And PPG Aquarium's International Conservation Center
This is amazing news Jackson seems to have a thing for siring daughters out of his 18 calves 12 are daughters which is great for the population as a whole, but the only downside is the eldest daughters are not mating Victoria was artificially inseminated god knowns how many times, Kianga was paired with Maclean but the results are unknown and Nidirah, Zuri (Daughter of Moja), Angelina, and Zuri (Daughter of Christe) have not been paried up with bulls. And Kalina, Nayh, and Little Bit have passed away. Hopefully this calf does survive, and this time around Seeni may learn mothering behavior as she rejected her last calf and since her long time herd mate has given birth herself it could be possible that she can be inspire her to take care of her own offspring.

And there it is, so proud of my girl

Seeni won't be bred again, had to do with milk production and not a behavioral issue. Glad they listened to a certain someone about keeping the calf at the farm this time around

I think it had to due with both she rejected her first calf in Botswana due to her entire family being culled at a very young age so she was not able to learn nor develop her maternal instincts

I remember maybe a decade ago thinking the Asian SSP was the mess. And now its the opposite in my mind. How times have changed o_O

And to think the Asian SSP hasn’t imported elephants (bar a select few) for decades. While the African SSP has continually brought in new blood. And then wasted it and I imagine in a few years we will hear chatter about the need for further imports, when its clear deeper issues exist

I know the Cincinnati zoo though for their future new Asian elephant exhibit they’re receiving 2 cows and their calves from the Dublin Zoo

I mean yes it occasionally happens as in Cincinnati's case or Ongard being imported from Australia to Zoo Miami. But from the wild or wild regions almost none have been imported. Meanwhile for African elephants in the last 2 decades you have the Swazi elephants (2 imports - 28 elephants) and Pittsburgh (3 "rescues"). On top of that zoos such as Maryland and Pittsburgh wanted to import a further 28 elephants. I mean thats a ton of new blood and yet here we are in regards to the African SSP.

is hogle park in Utah set up for bulls? That may be why they have not been able to pair up Zuri.

No. It probably has a capacity of 3/4 adult females and that's pushing it with the rhinos occupying a chunk of the complex. It really shouldn't be a breeding facility with limited room and barn space. I mean the exhibit is 1/2 an acre for the elephants and the shared barn with the rhinos is like 7,500 sq feet including keeper space.

They really should consider what's best for the population, but I doubt they want to be without elephants. I mean they could replace them with hippo as long as they renovate the barn to include a pool.

thanks I was afraid of that. The pool outside doesn’t seem to be large/wide enough for hippos. I think it’s only 10 feet deep.

You have a great point about Utah's Hogle Zoo and its elephant complex. 'Elephant Encounter' opened in 2005 and at that point it was the largest addition to the zoo in a quarter-century. However, the exhibit was basically outdated the day it made its debut. Shifting rhinos elsewhere would create more space for elephants, but the area would still be too small and Utah should really make a decision about elephants ASAP. It's interesting, because their other big exhibit complexes in recent times (Asian Highlands, Rocky Shores, African Savanna) have all been quite good.

Does anyone know how many rhinos hogle park has and if they are actively breeding? I can see only one in the media so far.

apparently there are four spaces that the elephants and rhino share.

some of the fencing on media doesn’t definitely look secure for a bull. (Cable fencing with no piping to prevent climbing over, etc).

Hogle has two rhinos and I believe both are quite old and post reproductive.
