North American African Elephant Population

gee, I’m shocked about there being no breeding behaviors with Batir and Tonga

isn’t their a female elephant at North Carolina Reya or something like that. She’s somewhere like 19 I think. And why can’t they just artificially inseminate those girls if they want calves so badly. They need to breeding like they have at Omaha
There is no Female at North Carolina that is 19 the only female close to that age is Batir

huh. Guess I’m just that stupid then lol

however on a serious note. Why can’t artificially inseminate Batir like they did at Louisville Zoo I think it was a couple years ago. She hasn’t had a calf, she’s going to stop cycling soon, she has valuable genetics, like…

The zoo did try to artificially inseminate both Tonga and Nekhanda in 2012 or 11 but they never got pregnant

True, but I am not saying that as an exuse for them not to breed Batir

I know. I’m just a little… bitter with how the African Elephant breeding program in the US has gone. Dallas they haven’t had a calf in 5 years. Sedgwick hasn’t had a calf yet either (although some of the those girls I think just hit sexual maturity so that could be why). Fresno it’s been a flop. Everything irritates me about how African Elephant Breeding in the US has gone. Hopefully those other 3 girls that are at the Omaha Zoo that are NOT pregnant get breeding here real quick

I think you should see my fantasy version of the elephant population in the Us The Monster I've created it should cheer you up

Though it’s exciting and fun to make these predictions/fantasies, sadly it’s unlikely a lot of the transfers you have made in the thread will actually come to fruition. We can always hope though!

@John Marchwick you’re not the only one. A lot of us are frustrated and disappointed at what the population has become. Dallas, Fresno, DAK, SDZSP, Sedgwick, Omaha, Indianapolis, NC, Tampa, and Pittsburgh all have the potential of saving the population from “doom.” They just all need to start working together and get their animals bred. It’s not like the breeding population is small, that’s not the case at all. Zoos just aren’t doing the best they can with the breeding animals they hold.

All they way in 2008 calves where being born at every two to three years growing the population. Pittsburgh was one the right track to have a large herd but every thing failed when they sent both Moja, and Jackson.

Pittsburgh just had a calf on the bright side. But yes I get your point. And Omaha fortunately things look like they’re turning around there

A lot of those elephants look so small still. Do find it a positive thing that Ajani is interested in mating
They eldest female is Stephanie but she is post reproductive, Simunye, Zuberi, Arusi and Xolani are all of prime breeding age, and Ajani takes a lot after his father Maclean and his height is one of them

Oh my, either Ajani is huge or some of the girls are really little! That video was posted 3 years ago so I'm sure we will start to see some pregnancy announcements or even birth announcements from Wichita within the next couple years.

I knew one of them was. Is Ajani at the the prime breeding age as well?

you really think so?
Well Ajani has had an ideal life for a bull elephant, he was raised by mom in a herd with other calves for his first couple years and then was transferred to Birmingham and was part of a bachelor herd including mature bull Bulwagi. So given all this, he should definitely be capable of getting the job done and from the video it looks like he's pretty interested in the cows as well. Like you said most of the girls are just hitting prime breeding age so it's very possible Ajani may have already gotten one or more of them pregnant. Stay optimistic!

I believe that Zuberi could be pregnant
