North American African Elephant Population

Im not sure it’s been announced she is pregnant, it was just noted they had ‘bred’. If she currently is pregnant, she would be due in December of 2023.

I believe @Kifaru Bwana was referring to when will the results of a pregnancy test be known.

Pregnancy can be detected as early as three months in elephants, so if a mating occurred in February, it should be confirmed by May/June 2022 if Litsemba is pregnant.

Previous news articles from the zoo state four months in is when they found out, so June 2022.

As for when we’ll find out - the zoo seems to wait until much later in the pregnancy to announce it, so possibly around this time next year.

Either way, fingers crossed!

Question: How successful is AI with Africans?

Because theoretically, u could get sperm from a wild bull to bring in new genes.

There’s been “decent” success with it, there’s a handful of calves in recent years that have been to the program so far. Just off the top of my head, Sutton at West Midland‘s, Kibali and Iqhwa at Vienna, and I *think* Zaquary at Zlin (he was an AI baby, and I’ve heard mud her that he was sired through the project, but that one I don’t know for sure).

The North American population now consists of 204 (39.165) African elephants.

It’s crazy to think that in just 4 years, the US African elephant population has decreased by over 60 individuals. Are there any projections on how small the population will get before the numbers start to stabilize?

A couple of corrections:
-Cora at Topeka is an Asian elephant
-Thandi at the ICC is Thandi at Granby she was transferred a couple years ago
-Serengeti Ranch is no longer in California, the owner and elephants moved to Oregon
-Mbili at Toledo is commonly known as Renee
-Also your heading of AZA elephants is inaccurate as some of these facilities are not accredited

If San Diego Zoo Safari Park were to get a new bull elephant to breed, which bull would it be? I can see Samson (2008) of the Maryland Zoo moving to SDZSP, since there is no excuse to keep a father-son pair of African Elephants. Another idea is to move Tamani (2005) of the Kansas City Zoo to San Diego, since all of their females are at least 38 years old.

Samson does not live with his father though...

There has already been a ton of discussion on SDZSP’s new breeding bull in this thread… just go back and read that. We don’t need to clog up the thread with the same discussion again. Besides, there has been no confirmation from the park that they’re receiving a new bull anytime soon so all of this is pure speculation at this point and doesn’t really belong in this thread.
