North American African Wild Dog Population

Last week, a 7-year-old female African wild dog named Peanut arrived at the Denver Zoo from the Honolulu Zoo on a breeding recommendation.

Last week, we were thrilled to welcome a seven-year-old female African wild dog named Peanut to our DZCA family! Peanut joined us all the way from Honolulu Zoo on a breeding recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan. African wild dogs, also known as African painted dogs, have a very complex social structure that requires carefully managed introductions and general care. Peanut was first introduced to her new mate and pack alpha, Theodore (Teddy) Roosevelt, followed by David (Dave) Livingstone and then Nigel. Thanks to the skill and dedication of our Animal Care team, each introduction went smoothly, and Peanut is now a fully integrated member of the pack! These dogs are Endangered according to the IUCN Red List, so we're hopeful for potential puppies in the future to help bolster populations in human care. Be sure to visit DZCA to learn more about these incredible carnivores and to say hi to Peanut in person!"
 
Apparently, Disney’s Animal Kingdom is currently seeing a shift in their current pack. At the moment, there are three painted dogs visible in their usual enclosure along the Kilimanjaro Safaris’ route.

Excitingly, two of these dogs are females, and arrived from an unspecified facility sometime recently, while the male that lives with them is, according to my sources*, (1.0) Riddler. If that sounds familiar, you might ask if he’s still alive and did not pass away after all? To that I say, it’s sounds like that’s the case; but again, I’m not too familiar with each painted dog, so take this aspect with a word of caution.

As for Riddler’s brothers, it appears that they have been effectively retired from public display. No word on if they’re still alive, just know that the current pack should be 1.2.0 at the latest.

As of early May they still had 4 males, so unless there's been deaths in the meantime they have 4.2 dogs.

Edit - should have mentioned originally, male Riddler was alive at that point and may well indeed be the one living with the two females.

A quick update on the two females of DAK, their names have been confirmed to be Xavi and Sonnett; two sisters that came from the Oklahoma Ctiy Zoo.
 
From their socials, the Wildlife World Zoo is now a current holder thanks to the arrival of three dogs from The Living Desert Zoo*.

  • 1.0 Etosha (January 28th, 2020 - Kiraka x Beatrix)
  • 1.0 Okavango (January 28th, 2020 - Kiraka x Beatrix)
  • 1.0 Zambezi (January 28th, 2020 - Kiraka x Beatrix)

*based on current individuals within the population, neither facility has publicly stated their origins.
