North American Asian and African Elephant Populations: Discussion and Speculation

Titan would be about 13/14 years old now, so it's not surprising to see he was able to provide viable semen two years ago. Gung a bull in Australia, conceived naturally for the first time at the age of seven, and I'm sure there's other bulls out there who've done the same.

I agree, Titan is quite a small animal, and that can obviously mean he can't reach some of the taller girls; which is probably why he's been used for AI in the meantime. But the girls (besides his mother) are around his age; so should be smaller animals too. In saying that, Titan should be able to reach the girls at least by now.

I'm assuming Sedgewick may have been waiting for their younger girls to reach amiable age for a first time calf (which would be about now). Titan obviously can't breed with his mother, but perhaps she's been grouped with Ajani without any success as of yet.

We don’t know on whether or not Ajani has or has not had success at the Sedgwick County Zoo breeding wise with Simunye though. For all we know Simunye could be one of the six African Elephants due in 2023.

That's right, and same goes for the other girls too. Considering Titan's now been used for breeding elsewhere, it absolutely makes sense that Sedgewick would've been breeding him there as well (whether that's through AI as well, or naturally).

An interesting statement the new Omaha zoo director made. He said as of 2023 there were 10 African Elephants in the North American population that are or were pregnant at the beginning of this year (Lolly and Mlilo given they just had calves born are no longer pregnant). However the director was also not correct about a couple of things. He said there were 5 African Elephants born in the United States, that’s not correct as there were only 2 African Elephants born in the United States, both of which were at the Omaha Zoo. That being said though, I think the director was correct about the 10 African Elephants that are or were pregnant at the beginning of 2023 because I think he was referring to African Elephant pregnancies due both in 2023 and 2024. Since Ommas pregnancy was confirmed today at the Omaha Zoo too, I personally think that’s what he meant which would mean there are 8 African Elephants currently pregnant in the U.S, 4 of which are due this year with calves based off of former Omaha Zoos director Dennis Pate and his information and 4 African elephants would be due next year in the United States.

Confirmed Pregnancies or births in the United States in 2023.
1.) 19 year old female African Elephant Mlilo (WILD X WILD) at the Dallas Zoo had her second calf born on February 26th, 2023. The male calf is named Okubili and the sire is 19 year old first time father African Elephant male Tendaji (WILD X WILD). The calf was naturally conceived.
2.) 13 year old African Elephant female Lolly (WILD X WILD) at the Omaha Zoo had her first calf born on March 2nd, 2023. The male calf is named Mopani and the sire is 22 year old African Elephant male Callee (Jackson X Savannah). The calf was naturally conceived.
3.) 16 year old female African Elephant Zahara (Ali X Ivory) at the Indianapolis Zoo is pregnant with her first calf and is due in October 2023. The sire of her calf is either 22 year old African Elephant male Callee at the Omaha Zoo (Jackson X Savannah) or 14 year old African Elephant male Titan at the Sedgwick County Zoo (WILD X Simunye). Zaharas first pregnancy occurred through artificial insemination.
4.) 29 year old female African Elephant Jayei (WILD X WILD) at the Omaha Zoo is pregnant with her second known calf and is due in August 2023. The sire of her calf is 22 year old African Elephant male Callee (Jackson X Savannah) and the pregnancy occurred through naturally breeding.
5.) Two other African Elephant females are pregnant and due this year but their identities have not been verified.

Confirmed African Elephant Pregnancies in the United States due in 2024.
1.) 43 year old African Elephant female Renee (WILD X WILD) at the Toledo Zoo is pregnant via artificial insemination with her 3rd calf and is due in spring 2024. The father of her calf is 14 year old African male Titan (WILD X Simunye) at the Sedgwick County Zoo who is a first time mother.
2.) 17 year old African Elephant female Nadirah (Jackson X Donna) at Disneys Animal Kingdom is pregnant with her first calf and due in sometime in 2024. The father of her calf is 41 year old African Elephant male Maclean (WILD X WILD). The pregnancy occurred through natural breeding.
3.) 12 year old African Elephant female Omma (WILD X Jayei), at the Omaha Zoo is pregnant with her first calf and is due in spring 2024. The sire of her calf is 22 year old African Elephant male Callee (Jackson X Savannah). The pregnancy occurred through natural breeding.
4.) possibly a 4th African Elephant female not yet identified due in 2024.

I’ve also verified that ZooTampa has no females due in 2023. As far as the girls due in 2023 with the calves, I’m pretty sure it’s any of the females at the Sedgwick County Zoo aside from Stephanie or possibly but unlikely Batir at the North Carolina Zoo. As far as the possibly the 4th African Elephant female pregnant female due in 2024 I think it’s most likely Litsemba at the Reid Park Zoo.

I would expect Africam Safari to have at least two pregnant elephants.

Oh, I was referring to specifically African Elephants in my last post regarding reproduction. African Safari only has Asian Elephants but it’s possible they do have pregnant females there too. I haven’t been speculating on Asian Elephants just because there’s been so many possibilities and there’s no point in speculating that far ahead given how little available information there is.

Africam Safari has had African elephant births every year since 2017. I believe you're talking about African Lion Safari in Canada.

I guess the only remaining options stand as:

  1. Angelina and/or Zuri at Pittsburgh (through AI)
  2. Seeni and/or Sukiri at ICC
  3. Batir at North Carolina
  4. Tina and/or Makena at Montgomery (through AI)
  5. And a long shot, but still possible - any of the girls at the Safari Park??
Considering there's been some recent AI's using Callee and Titan, it's possible some females that aren't in breeding situations which we've previously ruled out could still be candidates.

Why wasn’t this ever mentioned in the North American African Elephant Population thread?
Technically they belong to the Central American Population and are discussed in the Latin American elephant population thread.
This is their current population (they don’t really give much updates on their herd) and by now I believe all of their females are proven breeders.

@PSO already confirmed Pittsburgh is out. Going back to ZooTampa I know what the zoo as well as what I said before that they were breeding their elephants in 2022 still in an e-mail I got from them but they never specified which of their females they were breeding. I initially thought that they didn’t have any females due potentially this year but I think they could potentially still.

I really am wondering more with Batir if she really is pregnant. I know it’s such a long shot but aside from this gut feeling that she is that I can’t seem to shake off, when the zoo moved Artie, plus they got Louie in 2021 I almost wonder if Louie learned something from Callee about breeding and if that’s why they sent him to Northern Carolina possibly? He transferred there in 2021 and if Batir got pregnant in 2021 she would be due this year.

Ok, I’ve noticed a lot of speculation about Duncan’s move out of the Houston Zoo and I feel as though this is the more appropriate to place to start this conversation and not in the North American Asian Elephant population 2023.

As for Duncan himself, @ZCChip suggested he could go to the Saint Louis Zoo, however Duncan is related to 3 of the Saint Louis Zoos 4 eligible breeding cows. As for @Nile Hippo Expert who suggested Duncan could go to the Denver Zoo, given they only have a bachelor herd and Houston states he’s going to a breeding situation.

As for @StoppableSan , I don’t see how Duncan could be going to Los Angeles given they don’t have a breeding herd there. Duncan would not be going to Oklahoma City Zoo because he’s also related to all of the breeding females there. Fort Worth is be a possibility, but at this point, it’s one of those wait and see situations. As @IndianRhino once said, there has so many possibilities when it comes to transfers like this that there’s no point in speculating on something like this.

The only girls at OKC who would even potentially accept his advances would be Achara and Kairavi and it sounds bad but they're only related in a sense that their his 2nd or 3rd cousins which from a genetics standpoint means they share at most 25% DNA. Remember their parents are only half siblings through their Dad Onyx so its not ideal but also not that bad IMO.

Same thing goes with the cows at St Louis.

Well, ideally though Duncan should be bred with girls he isn’t related too…

I think White Oak is a possibility for Duncan's move, because their only bull (Casey) is getting old (fifty-two years, record for oldest sire at calf's conception is fifty-eight), and Duncan will be able to breed most of their cows in a few years.

What about Duncan moving to Albuquerque? I don't know if they are still trying to breed Rozana, and maybe Albert is not getting the job done?
That is a possibility but at the same time, Duncan is a very young bull and I'm not so sure Rozie would accept his advances as a breeding bull. They shouldn't be wasting valuable breeding time for Rozie waiting on Duncan to grow and mature.
