North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

Your very welcome and I also strongly believe that Radza's sons will carry on this large tusk gene and dont forget about the Motek x Warda line they are tall leggy elephants with spectacular tusks Teddy at only 27 has long tusks that cross one another
I am somewhat disappointed that I never got to see Radza, I believe he weighed in at ten tons and ten foot plus in height, Very sad to see he has passed away now. At least to produced quite a few young to carry on his line so that something. I have seen a few videos of him on youtube, such an impressive bull. I believe the only other bull in Europe like him was Boy in Russia. Motek x Warda line?

Other massive bulls in europe are Bindu, Luka the tallest of all bulls in europe, Motek the grandfather, great father, and great-grandfather to many, and actually Boy lived in Ukraine until his death in 2010

This is the personal report following his death " Boy was an Asiatic Bull elephant, born in approximately 1970. The records don’t say where, but we speculate that he was wild caught. He moved to Kyiv Zoo in the early 1970’s from Rostock.

Although Boy had been on his own for quite a few years, previously he had two female companions, he bred once with the first one.

Throughout the years Boy was at Kyiv Zoo the country of Ukraine changed greatly, notably it experienced the tragic nuclear disaster at Chornobyl, and also Ukraine became independent, leading to the problems associated with becoming a new country and the changes from communism to capitalism. As a city run zoo, these changes affected Boy, the zoo staff and all the other animals.

Boy was extremely special to the people of Kyiv; he grew up alongside them to become probably the biggest Asian bull in Europe (3.45 metres) and was a firm favourite with many, including the Mayor of Kyiv who was his Guardian and funded many of the recent developments to Boy’s enclosure.

Boy had a reputation as an aggressive dangerous animal; he killed one keeper and injured a few others.
He was plagued with health problems following tusk extractions due to breaking them. His feet were also of great concern. Because of these factors vets and other elephant experts travelled around the world to assist and provide advice, many giving their time and skills voluntarily. Boy had a great many friends and I’m so grateful to all of them.

When I first met Boy he wasn’t doing so well. The zoo was in financial trouble due to the economic crisis and other political issues. He needed help with his behaviour, nutrition and foot-care. I asked the elephant zoo community for help and it came flooding in. People gave me their time and expertise freely to help me redesign Boy’s enclosure, develop an enrichment programme and take him from a non-contact situation into a Protected Contact Operant Conditioning programme. Boy and his keepers took to this new system like ducks to water.

Boy was a special animal to me, I found him to be quick thinking, hard working and great to be around. He made me learn an awful lot about elephants. There’s just something wonderful about tilting your head up and gazing into the eyes of a huge animal and knowing that you both understand that when he puts his head or foot on the target stick he’s going to get a big reward.

Boy collapsed and died in the morning on Monday 26th April 2010. His death seems to have been very quick. Initial signs indicate poisoning, and known animal rights activists are suspected, a necropsy will be carried out."

Thank you for that new information. That height surely would be close only to Raja Gal the king of Nepal. I did understand that it was claimed he died of poison from the public?

The Oklahoma City Zoo posted another update on their elephant fighting EEHV. While they did note she is lethargic she has continued to interact with keepers and participate in her treatments.

she also has received blood and plasma donations from her herd as well as other blood and plasma donations from AZA zoos across the country

And if these three calves are indeed female calves flash forward 10 years you have Lilly, Natasha, Opal, Emily, Nellie, Hannah, Gigi, Anna May, Luna, Sunita, Imke and hopefully three more cows having calves they are set to have the largest herd of Asian Elephants outside of Asia
I forget to add Rose

@Javier Iniguez I did some double checking of the Height of the largest known Asian elephant of modern times which is claimed to be (possible late) Raja Gal of Nepal who's height was said to be the same as the height you mentioned of the late Boy of the Ukraine at 3.45 metres. Raja Gal weight was estimated at over ten tons, Was Boys weight know at some stage to compare these to giants?
Checking on Radaz weight and height was 3.25 metres/10.7 inches. and weight given at 7200kg. Also he sired 17 babies.

Boy was definitely one of Europe's super giants, and he was on par the both Radza and Raja Gal

I am thinking perhaps they may end up building another barn or even use the old barn if needed?
And if Johnson holds true to his reputation as a bull that mainly sires daughters the african Lion Safari will indeed have the largest herd of all related females, and you'll need one heck of a barn to hold a massive herd

Has anyone heard anything new about Trong Nhi and Nhi Lihn’s departure from Rotterdam zoo? It’s been confirmed that they’re coming to the USA but was it even officially confirmed they’re going to D.C. yet?

It’s been confirmed that they’re coming to the USA
I’ve actually never seen this being officially confirmed. I’ve only heard other zoochatters confirm it but not any specific articles about it. Has Rotterdam released anything about it? If so, do you mind sharing it here?

I have seen no official confirmation, but on the EU Thread, I believe someone has shared that one of Rotterdam's posts had mentioned DC as well as this fall as a timeframe. I would say the best bet would be to take a look at any current CITES/USDA Import Permits(not sure if there are any others required). Given the timeframe that has been floating around the permits should be posted for public review/commenting now. But also given NZP's secretive nature when it comes to animal moves in recent years, I highly doubt we will know when/if their coming till the date is upon us.

According to OKC’s Facebook Live, Kairavi is doing much better. Though the virus is still circulating in her blood, her blood cell counts are starting to go up and she’s starting to make a full recovery! :)
This is excellent news of Okc zoo as kai can witnesses the birth of her little sibling and once she comes of age in 10 years time she will start to have calves of her own, but also for Asha as no longer has the burden of mourning the lost of another daughter

In their magazine (from November or December last year, I believe) they stated “the way it is now Trong nhi and Nhi linh will end up somewhere in the United States next year” and when Fahim the bull arrived they stayed he would not breed with either Trong nhi or nhi Linh as they would move soon.

Here is an image of the magazine article and my translated versions of the documents. I’m sorry I can’t find the original documents for fahim’s arrival and the new calf’s birth 549A11C6-19A6-4E9D-AD18-6988AF5B91E9.jpeg9CA1EACC-F0B3-477A-A191-3CC66ED4FAA5.jpegEF676FC4-D171-4427-8E21-42C64A99A8D5.pngA0C5430C-C2D7-4483-A783-CF3D5AC10F19.png

Good to see it being confirmed. Also, according to @Elephantelephant Fahim already bred with Trong Nhi so I guess plans changed.

that’s definitely a plan I’m glad changed! I hope everything else stays on track. Also according to the USDA all pachyderms, including elephants, can only be brought in through three Miami, Los Angeles and New York airports, so it’s possible that some information could learned through airport documentation.

I haven’t been able to find any permit application regarding the elephants as of yet. Considering the normal 60 day comment period, its safe to say if it happens this year we would need to see it published in the federal registrar fairly soon.
