North American Asian Elephant Population 2021

ABQ BioPark Zoo elephant fights illness

Another update on Thorn. Sadly he hasn’t gotten better and at first the zoo believed he could recover, now they’re not so sure. He is getting sicker but fortunately he hasn’t had any surprises in terms of trajectory. Lot of unknowns at this point and I’ll be keeping him in mind this holiday season

how awful. That means Jasmine is the only surviving calf of Rosanna.

Rozie is the only offspring of both of her wild born parents and so she is incredibly genetically valuable to the population. The loss of another of her calves is devastating news.

Hopefully her and her only remaining daughter, Jazmine, will get the chance to breed soon with Samson.

Samson is now at the Oregon Zoo. There’s a bull at the zoo now named Albert but sadly he’s related to Jasmine

Oh yes, Albert was who I meant. He is the father of Jazmine unfortunately. Hopefully he will be bred again with Rozie though. Maybe AI can be used with Jazmine.

Horrible news especially on the 25th this is the second calf Rozana has lost to EEVH, although Thorn was part of the Bandara bloodline he was more genetically valuable through his grandparents famous San Diego bull Ranchipur and Alice.

Samson is the father of Jazmine not Albert. Samson and Albert are half-siblings so Jazmine can still not breed with Albert.

Does anyone know when the next group of White Oak elephants are supposed to arrive? I thought the bulls were supposed to move in before the end of the year. They are supposed to become an incredibly important breeding facility, but the girls aren’t getting any younger and most still haven’t had calves or haven’t had calves in a long time. It’d be really nice if the proven bulls: Charlie, Vance, and Casey would arrive and get things going.

Vance has TB by the way so it would he unsafe for him to breed.

You shouldn’t make assumptions like this regarding EEHV. Just because she’s on the older side doesn’t mean shes out of the woods. The virus could still kill her
Calm down there, that's why I said "I'm *cautiously* optimistic"... I'm not assuming anything. All I'm doing is hoping for the best, which is what everyone should do.

sorry. Im just so worried about what this virus is going to do with Jasmine. If she dies that means Rosanna has no surviving offspring left. It’s crucial she beats this thing and I’m hoping someday she does have another calf but I’m worried. Did Jasmine catch it from Thorn?

To be fair, the article @Animals R AMAZING! linked noted that as an elephant of eight years, Jazmine has a more developed immune system than Thorn - so that’s something positive to focus on.

Elephants at the tail end of the EEHV risk period can (and do) die of the virus of course. Australasia’s only fatality to date was of a female approaching her eighth birthday - a devastating loss.

However, Jazmine is receiving the best care the zoo can give her and will hopefully come through this. My best wishes to her and the team caring for her.

It's fine, I get it, I'm also very worried but I'm trying my best to stay positive about it. This is what they said in the press release about it:

"It is not yet known how the virus is transmitted or if Jazmine and Thorn are carrying the same strain. Individual elephants react differently to the virus, and the BioPark cautions that it is too early to tell how it will impact Jazmine, who is older and has a more developed immune system than her younger brother. Jazmine did not test positive for EEHV when it claimed the life of her sister Daizy in 2015."

but it can’t be a coincidence though. This happened at the Rosamond Griffith Zoo with Batu and Ajay relatively at the same time last year. Maybe they’re some strains that are contagious and can spread to other elephants while other strains don’t.

I really hope you’re right. It makes me sick their isn’t a vaccine for them still and how many have continued to die from this virus.
