North American Asian Elephant Population 2024

When was it confirmed?
I visited back in May and did the Elephant Insider Tour and when I asked the question of the future of their elephants the keeper responded with plans are ever changing. Since there is such a large age gap with Karnaudi and the rest of the girls only time will tell if they bring in more elephants or move Karnaudi on when the time comes.
Ultimately this just seems like a generic answer most zoos give when it comes down to the future of a species at a zoo.

In saying that though, this is somewhat still accurate as plans with zoos do always change. Whilst right now the plan may be to phase them out, there may be a change in management down the line that may wish wish to invest in a completely new herd. Especially considering elephants are such long lived animals it's difficult to predict where the zoo will be at in say 20 years time when the current herd are in their final years.

New calves out of ALS!

Lilly gave birth to a female named Abigail on January 28th and Opal gave birth to a female named Olivia on February 2nd! The father is presumably Johnson as usual.

African Lion Safari on Instagram: " Double the joy at African Lion Safari!

(We can also confirm that ALS' herd consists of 18 elephants, as per the post)
Awesome news, Johnson's had a great run with producing female calves, something I assume Columbus are hoping to replicate now that he's there.

The calves that were rumored to be born last year were in fact born earlier this year (to mums Lily and Opal). The 20 initially mentioned on here included these two calves.

So with that in mind, they've apparently lost two elephants; one of which was Johnson departing. Sadly it appears they've lost another elephant that we're unaware of.

It seems to be Maya.

Im doubtful its any of Lilly's daughters either, seeing as the post mentioned that Abigail would grow up with four sisters.
Exactly, as per the post we can confirm the following elephant are still there; Lily, Piccolo, Hannah, Luna and Imke (alongside young Abigail), and Natasha, Opal and Anna May (alongside Olivia). So that's 10 of the 18 elephants.

In another thread Hyak II mentioned he had yet to confirm whether Sunita, Rose and Nellie were still there - so one of those three is likely the missing elephant.

Extremely sad news. However we can take solace in the fact that OKC will likely have Asha pregnant again in short order once they deem her fit to conceive again. As bad as it is, the fact that it was a bull calf also helps lessen the blow as well. Losing a calf is never good, but losing a female is always acutely more painful.

I was just thinking this as well. As horrible and sad as it is, there is indeed a silver lining in this situation in the fact that there won't be another son of Rex to place in a decade's time. Loosing any calf is unideal, but this calf would unfortunately probably have ended up spending years in bachelor holding and unprioritized for breeding.

Some updates from Columbus:

- During a keeper talk today, it was stated that they do not have any confirmed pregnancies. However, I am taking this information with a slight grain of salt considering that Columbus historically waits until the last few months of gestation to announce pregnancies. The keeper did confirm that Sabu did breed all three females and that they are "very hopeful".

- Johnson has begun introductions to the girls and Frankie. If any of the females aren't pregnant, he'll probably get the job done in short order :p

- Due to the new yard construction, the zoo doesn't have any timeline for Raja's arrival. More than likely, we can expect him to be transferred no earlier than late October.

- Differing from their last statement on this (which I did hear from a Docent), Phoebe is in remarkably good reproductive health and they plan on breeding her into her 40s.
