North American Asian Elephant Population 2025

That’s certainly a lot. He’s played a big role in the breeding program. That’s an animal with status they lost then.
Indeed, a sad loss ..., but given his history and on current breeding and offspring he made a good contribution to the next generation of Asiatic elephants in North America!

Did Oklahoma City Zoo already have a new bull lined up as they recently moved over Bowie from Fort Worth (... in 2022). Or is Kandula likely to take over now ..., going forward (he is unproven to date)?

Bowie was already in place to breed Rex's daughters and has a calf on the way there so at the very least he will likely continue to be the main bull for them. It's a 50/50 imo whether Kandula will also begin breeding there since he is so closely related to Bowie and is unproven, but who's to say!

I've always felt as though Rex was a good example of a relatively well managed bull, and that ALS/OKC did right by him. Once it was clear that he wasn't the most viable option genetically at ALS anymore, he was moved onto another great home where he could continue to contribute to the population and still get a lot of attention. No holding on for dear life due to sentimental reasons - and the same has now happened with Johnson! Very commendable collaboration and pragmatism.

Also big kudos to OKC for having the foresight to acquire multiple other bulls prior to his passing, and not leave a gap. The way it should be if at all possible, imo!

Nonetheless - it must be hard on the staff right now between Bamboo's passing, the loss of Asha's pregnancy, and now this. I think this upcoming calf in the spring couldn't come at a better time to lift everyone's spirits a bit!

Here is an update on Rose-Tu's pregnancy; it says she is expected to give birth between February 16th and March 16th.
Rose-Tu’s baby is almost due; here’s when Portland can expect its newest elephant calf at the Oregon Zoo
I hope everything goes smoothly when the times comes it has been far to long since Oregon had a calf. Hopefully there will be less backlash against the zoo as well as the Johnsons/Have Trunk will Travel don't own the calf thankfully.

Very sad news to hear. He lived such a long life (especially for a bull) and it's a testament to his keepers that he was able to stay strong for so long and achieve an incredible age.

He was an icon in Oklahoma, and so will be sorely missed by those who knew him.

Going from being a circus elephant in his early years and then moving into zoo life, being given the opportunity to breed has certainly paid its dues with his numerous children and grandchildren including another grandchild due this year to his daughter, Achara.
I saw him up close at Rockton in 1997 I believe the ALSP took in a number of ex circus elephants into the fold!

While sweet to watch, this isn't new information and was already mentioned on last year's thread on multiple occasions. Sabu and both boys have been spending time together for months now on a rotation schedule.

A USDA report from December 2024 seems to show that Baby, Cora, Sally, and Siam are the White Oak elephants currently at the Ringling Center for Elephant Conservation. This would mean however that Yulee does not have 28 elephant but rather 32 which does not line up with the information E Maximus was able to source so I am am somewhat skeptical. The reports in lowercase are the former Center for Elephant Conservation and in all caps are the Yulee campus on USDA but there could have been errors.

They probably were on the road. Elephants do get leased out to smaller circuses.
