North American Asian Elephant Population 2025

That is not correct. Almost all Asian elephant calves that have died in North America in the last decades were sick with either EEHV1 or EEHV5, 2 strains of the virus that are native to Asian elephants. The Asian calves dying never had anything to do with mixing of African and Asian elephants (exept a single case- Hansa from Woodland Park Zoo, who died from EEHV3 which was probably transmitted from the Adrican female that lived together with the Asian elephants at that time).

I knew that wasn't the only reason why zoos stopped doing this mix. Aren't there other reasons why the aza now frowns upon it?

And (with zoos doing naturalistic habitats these days), I thibk both species do have different habitat needs as they would NEVER interact in the wild no doubt. The newer Asian enclosures tend be planted with jungle like plants and bamboo and sometimes grey dirt walls, whilst with Africans they often just consist of grass and sand terrain and can consist of red mud cliff to simulate an African riverbank. I actually do not even know why some zoos did this species mix in former times.

I thought tima was to stay in LA until death as she's a rather elderly individual at 58. I also find it a quite a blow that Billy will never breed in the future like we all hoped as he seems to have genetic importance.

But I still hope new herds of either kind will imminently come in to replace the two previous elephants, I still gravitate towards multigejerational. I think Houston would be tossed out the window now as Chuck has a breeding recommendation with Shanti's daughter Joy this year as I said earlier in the population speculation thread. I also hope the zoo will be able to withstand all the activist drama when they plan which elephants will arrive afterwards.

The post in question appears to have been removed already - makes me wonder what's going on there.

Edit - various articles imply it's true, regardless of LA's taking down the post. They also state a pause in their elephant program so I dare say they're either dropping elephants or possibly updating the exhibit a bit more before returning.

That being said, Groucho was a fully grown bull then, the fencing is more than satisfactory. It's an I-beam structure, which has been used in other facilities with bulls (Werribee Open Range Zoo has I-beam fencing, albeit a thinner I-beam than Bronx).

Most of the elephant fencing at Werribee zoo is old/former railway line from the railways department

And leaves Oregon Zoo as the only zoo on the entire Pacific coast with them. Also I believe making LA the 7th facility on the coast to lose them in the last 15 years.

LA opened their habitat opened 15 years ago and is considered state of the art so I don't really anticipate an elephant phase out so soon. I think the question is more tailored to which Asians would be available candiates for a move to replace tina and billy.

While true their exhibit is on the newer side, I'm not holding my breath on elephants returning. Last I was aware the zoo is still having internal issues and there has been some hints of budget cuts. They'll also have to be prepared to face the activist fury if they bring in more, which for a city run zoo may not be something they choose to face. While I would like to be proven wrong, once Billy and Tina leave I feel there is a strong possibility elephants will not return. Shall have to wait and see, hoping for the best.

I have a hunch they are looking for new individuals to move to LA down the road. It's either they're unsure who they'll be, or their plans for that are nor publicly announced yet. It'll be too soon to know for sure either way.
